Sediments can bind toxic elements, and as there are several pollution sources, the risk of heavy metal accumulation on the floodplains is high. We aimed to determine whether fluvial forms have a role in metal accumulations. Topsoil samples were taken from point bars and swales in the floodplain of the Tisza River, North-East Hungary. Soil properties and metal concentrations were determined, and correlation and hypothesis testing were applied. The results showed that fluvial forms are important drivers of horizontal metal patterns: there were significant differences (p < 0.05) between point bars and swales regarding Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn. Vertical distribution also differed significantly by fluvial forms: swales had higher metal concentrations in all layers. General Linear Models had different results for macro and micro elements: macro element concentrations were determined by the organic matter, while for micro elements the clay content and the forms were significant explanatory variables. These findings are important for land managers and farmers because heavy metal concentration has a direct impact on living organisms, and the risk of bioaccumulation can be high on floodplains. Although in most European countries the basic preconditions for the occurrence of mass movements (rocks and topography) have been mapped in detail, the triggering factors (e.g. precipitation or earthquakes) are much less predictable. A detailed nation-wide inventory for Hungary provides a unique base for landslide susceptibility mapping. As the methodology for the assessment the technique applied in the ELSUS 1000 project was selected. The micro-regions of Hungary were identified where mass movements contribute to land degradation. The paper provides a statistical evaluation of the distribution of landslides, depicts landslide susceptibility on maps and reveals the role of anthropogenic factors in the generation of mass movements. The mid-resolution elevation model (SRTM1), land cover data (CLC50) and surface geology database (Mining and Geological Survey of Hungary) allowed for the derivation of a landslide susceptibility map more detailed than before. Along with its background information the map reflects and explains the differences in landslide susceptibility among the individual hilly and mountainous regions LA - English DB - MTMT ER - TY - CHAP AU - Lóczy, Dénes AU - Józsa, Edina AU - Szabó, József ED - Kertész, Ádám TI - Mass movements T2 - Landscape degradation in Hungary PB - Geographical Institute, Research Centre for Astronomy and Earth Sciences CY - Budapest SN - 9789639545601 T3 - Theory - Methods - Practice ; 74. They are left due to lateral shifting of river. In our work we focus on the ridge-and-swale topography from the aspect of their influence on the metal accumulation. Topsoil samples were taken from point bars and swales of the floodplain of the Tisza River. The concentrations of six heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb) were determined. Our results have shown that there were significant difference between bars and swales in case of five metals: Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb.
