The term Mesozoic Mediterranean brachiopod fauna (MMBF) is introduced here, and its taxonomic novelty is described in detail. Since its establishment in the earliest Jurassic until its disappearance by the late Hauterivian, the deep-water benthic community of the MMBF has been profoundly different from that of any other brachiopod fauna. Compared with the genus and species richness of the rest of the world, the MMBF had special importance in brachiopod history in terms of being an isolated faunal province and evolution center. An analysis of PBDB records via statistical methods revealed that brachiopods – both in the global pool and in the Mediterranean – responded sensitively to changes in the ocean–atmosphere system, and their taxonomic diversity patterns at the genus and species levels also showed significant synchroneity to Oceanic Anoxic Events. These deoxygenation intervals might have played a major role in deep-time brachiopod evolution as one of the most important regulatory forces. Nevéhez a fizika tudománytörténetében számos nagy felfedezés kötődik, igazi hírnevét, elismertségét azonban zseniális találmánya, a róla elnevezett torziós inga hozta meg. Jelenleg Magyarországon három tudományterületen használjuk a torziós ingát. It was his knowledge and work that showed that the various geological formations hidden beneath the surface have a measurable effect on the surface, which requires the construction of very sensitive instruments capable of measuring the Earth’s potential fields (magnetic and gravity fields). Eötvös had all the capabilities to achieve this. His thorough training, education, and perseverance brought him success, the laurels of which were not his, but those of the generation that succeeded him or his successors. Eötvös was first and foremost a scientist, not a businessman, who explored the Earth, the place of our everyday existence, its physical characteristics and natural phenomena, using all the tools he had created for the benefit of humankind. But Eötvös’s journey continues to date as we are exploring the world in the institute he created, trying to understand the relationship between physical forces and geology. This article provides a brief overview of the beginnings and some of the current achievements. This study aims to reconstruct the latest Jurassic–earliest Cretaceous palaeoenvironment and its evolution in the area of the Transdanubian Range (Hárskút and Lókút successions, Hungary), and provide new data on the relation between climate changes, palaeoceanography and marine ecosystems. Herein, calcareous nannofossil and geochemical data are presented and put into a geochronological framework in order to evaluate and compare palaeoenvironmental signals recorded in the two studied successions; the resultant scenario is compared with published literature data from both the western Tethyan region and northern Europe. Accordingly, in the Transdanubian Range, the relatively humid climate of the early Tithonian was followed by the late Tithonian–early Berriasian arid phase and the late Berriasian humidification. Besides, two intervals of palaeoceanographic perturbations were documented in the upper Tithonian–lowermost Berriasian (OD I), and the lower/upper Berriasian transition beds (OD II); these are manifested by the record of seafloor hypoxia and elevated accumulations of micronutrients, as well as changes in calcareous nannofossil assemblages. In the view of this study, the most probable trigger of the late Tithonian–early Berriasian aridization was a restriction in the atmospheric circulation (including monsoons), which was forced by climate cooling and lowering thermal gradient between landmasses and the ocean. Under such conditions, the mechanism of a wind‐induced water mixing might become less efficient, driving seawater stratification, seafloor hypoxia and increased burial of nutrients. Although the humid climate of the late Berriasian likely resumed the monsoon‐type circulation, the tectonic reactivation and uplift in the NeoTethyan Collision Belt might have effectively separated the Bakony Basin from the ‘open’ NeoTethys, which hampered the marine circulation and efficient water mixing in the former. One result of the urbanization, these layers often collapse on the buildings or if the buildings are the top of the bluff, houses can damage as a result of mass movements. Therefore, it is crucial to identify key parameters to predict the changes in the loess-paleosol layers stability. This study focused on three unaltered loess-paleosol profiles in Hungary (Bátaapáti, Nagymaros, Zebegény) where several vertical samples were taken. To assess the extent of weathering, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analyses were utilized. XRD provides detailed information about the crystallographic structure and chemical composition of minerals. Further details on the elemental composition of the three loess-paleosol systems were acquired through XRF analysis.
