Ugyancsak bemutatásra kerül az amerikai kontinentális, majd globális terjeszkedés vázlatos története és legmeghatározóbb mozzanatai, amelyek remélhetőleg iránymutatóként segíthetnek megérteni napjaink történéseit. Georges Santayana amerikai spanyol filozófus több mint száz évvel ezelőtti bölcs mondása talán soha nem volt annyira aktuális és életszerű, mint napjainkban, miszerint: „Mindazok, akik nem ismerik a történelmet, kénytelenek lesznek megismételni azt!” Hiszen a 21. század posztmodern világban minél nagyobb az elérhető digitális információáradat, annál nagyobb az információs kognitív zűrzavar és ellentétes töltetű értelmezési keret-elbeszélések (metanarratívák) sokasága. Ez az állapot a zavaros összeesküvés-elméletekkel tovább színezve egyáltalán nem segíti a laikus érdeklődőt a történelmi tájékozódásban, a nemzetközi kapcsolatok szövevényes viszonyainak átláthatóbb észlelésében (világpolitikai percepció) valamint a bonyolult, ellentmondásosnak tűnő világpolitikai folyamatok mozgatórugóinak megértésében. Mindezzel éles ellentétben az amerikai demokraták és a baloldali progresszív liberális véleményvezérek, a genderüggyel, kritikai fajelmélettel foglalkozó és woke eszmeiségű ifjú aktivisták egyetemi csoportjai, valamint a never-Trumper republikánusok és egyéb minden-ellenes pszeudo-anarchisták legrosszabb rémálma kezd körvonalazódni Trump második elnöki ciklusának kezdetével. Vegyük sorra, miket gondolt, mondott, ígért és tett az utóbbi napokban Donald Trump, aki kétségtelenül az egyik legmegosztóbb, legellentmondásosabb, gyűlölt és imádott „hős-mártír-elítélt gazdasági bűnöző” elnökként vonul be az amerikai történelembe. In this paper, I focus on examining the latter aspects of two centuries of Hungarian– American relations, and in particular, I aim to provide a concise outline of the contribution of the most renowned Hungarians to the American military successes and advances, from the War of Independence to Vietnam and beyond. I will present less familiar historical evidence in this matter, which highlights the significance of Hungarian Americans’ in US military and political history. The emergence and military contribution of Hungarians overseas in the New World started in the late eighteenth century with the rebellious and defiant opposition of the New England colonies against the British Empire, resulting in the American War of Independence and the birth of the United States in 1776. Heralding Hungarians’ heroism, as well as their military and political contribution to American history, there are several statues, busts, memorial plaques, streets, and even military quarters and ships bearing the names of legendary Hungarian figures to be presented in the following pages. This guiding principle or call for religious messianism, particularly through the zealous activism of reborn ‘Zionist Christians’, as we shall witness on the following pages, tends to reappear even in the dimension of the twenty-first century Middle East-policies of the United States, especially in the political acts of certain Republican presidents, such as Donald Trump. Two centuries after the arrival of the Pilgrim Fathers, one of the best foreign connoisseurs of America, the French aristocrat Alexis de Tocqueville, mentioned in his famous book Democracy in America (1835) that ‘Americans of all ages, all conditions, and all dispositions constantly form associations. They have not only commercial and manufacturing companies, in which all take part, but associations of a thousand other kinds, religious, moral, serious, futile, general or restricted, enormous or diminutive.’5 One may wonder whether these religious aspects and concepts have anything to do with contemporary American society at the turn of the third millennium, within the context of a postmodern, heterogeneous socio- political environment and in the realm of progressive think tanks and decision-makers. What effects and importance do deeply religious groups and denominations, particularly the Protestant ones, hold in their relations with the American political landscape and key decision-makers? The topic of this study on the nexus between religious ideas and politics per se has significant relevance, and poses an intriguing intellectual challenge when it comes to certain contemporary global security issues and religiously inspired civilizational conflicts, such as the threat of Islamic terrorist attacks or the war in Gaza, with serious historical religious implications around the Holy Land.
