These sensors were subjected to 1-100 ppm NOx, CO, H2S and H2O vapor in synthetic air. We have found that besides the expected changes in the electrical resistance of the film, there are also characterteristic differences in the noise pattern of the resistance vs. time function. This phenomenon is called fluctuation enhanced sensing and it can be used to increase the amount of information gathered from a carbon nanotube sensor device. The main advantage of fluctuation enhanced sensing is the improved selectivity of the sensor even if changes in electical resistance are rather low. Combined with differentiation based on modifying the adsorption characterstics of the nanotubes (e.g. by covalent functionalization), fluctuation enhanced sensing appears to be a very useful method for bringing cheap and reliable carbon nanotube based chemical sensors to the market. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study shows that the CCVD method resulted in long, bent and well graphitized carbon nanotubes on impregnated samples irrespective to the morphology of the silicate. Isomorphously substituted spherical MCM-41 with low Si/Fe ratio was found to be active catalysts for carbon nanotube production in CCVD as well. Synthesis of MWNTs with graphitization of template molecules in the pores of MCM-41 was successful in hexagonal MCM-41 samples irrespective that they contain or not iron in the silicate framework. Carbon nanotube formation was not observed in spherical derivatives of these samples during the graphitization process. Due to theire ate geometry they are ideal candidates to study surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Very thin films HBC were vaopur deposited to different SERS-active Ag-surfaces. The enhancement of the Raman signal was studied with the goal to develop an Ag-surface of optimum enhancement, for multiple use and very simple sample preparation. For the current surface the observed enhancement is up to 10(6). For SWNT filled with Ag-particles the SERS effect could also be shown - but enhancement was only a factor 10.
