Extensive sampling for archaeogenomics (424 individuals) and isotopes, combined with archaeological, anthropological and historical contextualization of four Avar-period cemeteries, allowed for a detailed description of the genomic structure of these communities and their kinship and social practices. We present a set of large pedigrees, reconstructed using ancient DNA, spanning nine generations and comprising around 300 individuals. We uncover a strict patrilineal kinship system, in which patrilocality and female exogamy were the norm and multiple reproductive partnering and levirate unions were common. The absence of consanguinity indicates that this society maintained a detailed memory of ancestry over generations. These kinship practices correspond with previous evidence from historical sources and anthropological research on Eurasian Steppe societies 2 . Network analyses of identity-by-descent DNA connections suggest that social cohesion between communities was maintained via female exogamy. Finally, despite the absence of major ancestry shifts, the level of resolution of our analyses allowed us to detect genetic discontinuity caused by the replacement of a community at one of the sites. This was paralleled with changes in the archaeological record and was probably a result of local political realignment.}, year = {2024}, eissn = {1476-4687}, orcid-numbers = {Gnecchi-Ruscone, Guido Alberto/0000-0002-6490-8101; Rácz, Zsófia/0000-0001-5116-2235; Samu, Levente/0000-0002-9967-9468; Szeniczey, Tamás/0000-0003-1546-7140; Faragó, Norbert/0000-0002-0351-1223; Friedrich, Ronny/0000-0001-5199-1957; Gulyás, Bence/0000-0002-7682-2065; Koncz, István/0000-0002-8113-5753; Balogh, Csilla/0000-0002-9161-1653; Bunbury, Magdalena M. A 2018–2019-ben zajlott ásatáson és terepbejárásokon előkerült leletanyag a kora bronzkortól a késő vaskorig terjedő időszakra keltezhető. Magyarországon egyedülálló, hogy egy adott lelőhelykomplexumon belül ekkora időintervallumon keresztül sikerült tanulmányozni az egyes korszakok kerámiaanyagában a nyersanyagválasztás és felhasználási technika változását vagy éppen állandóságát. Harminchárom, makroszkópos megfigyelések nyomán kiválasztott kerámiatöredék petrográfiai vizsgálatát végeztük el. Eredményeink azt mutatják, hogy a kora bronzkortól egészen a kora vaskor végéig, több évszázadon át a helyi nyersanyagot és azonos tradíciót alkalmaztak. A kora bronzkorban a nagyon finomszemcsés agyagot, míg a késő bronzkorban és a kora vaskorban a kevert agyagot kerekített, finom–durvaszemcsés homokkal soványították. Ezzel szemben a késő vaskori kerámiakészítők a korábbi hagyományok alkalmazása mellett más, távolabbi forrásterületekről származó nyersanyagokat (szögletes márvány- és kalcittöredékek, tiszta grafit, illetve szillimanitos grafitos kőzettöredék) is felhasználtak.}, year = {2024}, pages = {183-199}, orcid-numbers = {Györkös, Dorottya/0000-0003-4011-6342; Kürthy, Dóra/0009-0001-3206-1495; Fejér, Eszter/0000-0001-5991-3494; Novinszki-Groma, Katalin/0009-0000-4675-2812; Sörös, Franciska Zsófia/0009-0005-1694-9581} } @inbook{MTMT:34726336, title = {Sondage dans la cour orientale de l’îlot des Grandes Forges}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/34726336}, author = {Szabó, Dániel and Timár, Lőrinc}, booktitle = {Rapport intermédiaire 2023 du programme de recherche archéologique 2022-2025 sur le mont Beuvray}, unique-id = {34726336}, year = {2024}, pages = {138-149}, orcid-numbers = {Timár, Lőrinc/0000-0002-8670-1662} } @article{MTMT:34717623, title = {The architectural parallels of the mausoleum of Iovia, Pannonia revisited. The last couple of decades witnessed a considerable progress in the study of concurrent vegetation, climate and landscape management changes particularly via the increased number of high-resolution pollen records, archaeobotanical and archaeological investigations, coupled with stable isotope analyses of the charred cereal assemblages. In this review we synthetize the results of these research projects and demonstrate that the Neolithic and CA landscapes of Hungary were characterised by mixed oak forest communities, and in the territory of Hungary thermophilous steppe oak forests were present in the lowland landscape that were the principal choice of early farmers represented by the Körös-Starčevo-Criş cultures. Climate modelling and climate reconstruction from these regions indicate higher than preindustrial summer mean temperatures and higher than modern summer rainfall. We demonstrate that Linear Pottery Culture was the first culture that technologically advanced to clear larger plots of land for crop cultivation purposes. The first large scale and landscape level clearance is discernible in the Hungarian pollen records in the Late Neolithic period, when population size likely reached its Neolithic maximum, both in the lowlands and the surrounding mid-mountains.}, year = {2024}, eissn = {1617-6278}, orcid-numbers = {Magyari, Enikő Katalin/0000-0002-2844-8937; Raczky, Pál/0000-0001-5556-723X; Pálfi, Ivett/0000-0001-9814-3410; Darabos, Gabriella/0000-0001-8070-5630} }
