In the current study, we developed a mulitfeature paradigm, which included five types of changes in the parameters of speech: vowel change, consonant change, change in prosody (word stress), frequency and intensity. All changes were made in the initial syllable of a CVCV pseudoword according to Hungarian phonology. Our aim was to investigate whether adults were able to pre-attentively discriminate speech sound features which are altered according to acoustic or phonetic parameters. Native speakers of Hungarian were recruited; none of them had any speech or hearing impairment and were university students. During the experiment, naturally produced pseudowords were presented through to the participants. The stimuli consisted of a standard disyllabic word and five types of deviant. Simultaneously with the auditory pseudowords, participants were asked to watch a film without sound and to focus on it. We found similar results to previous literature: specifically, MMN responses were elicited by all the deviants, however with different amplitudes. The vowel and consonant deviants elicited the largest MMNs, while the intensity and pitch deviants the smallest. Word stress deviants elicited a characteristic double negativity, found in our earlier studies. The results indicate that our multifeature paradigm could be effectively utilized to elicit the MMN, and allows to apply the MMN as a potential biomarker for the assessment of phonological processing of children with possible reading disorders in future studies. This project aims to develop a music training and measure its effects. In the pre-training phase, we will recruit 10-year-old children with reading difficulties from schools in Hungary and behavioral and ERP experiments will be conducted. In the training phase, we will apply a music training we are currently developing. During the post-training phase, we will assess the effectiveness of our training conducting the experiments of the pre-training phase. We are expecting that our training, which is based on the association of speech and music elements, will show the importance of music transferring effects to cognitive functions of language such as reading. Results will be discussed in the light of the previous music training studies and acoustical and phonological processing in dyslexia. Music training studies for reading difficulties: What we know and where we need to go. PY - 2021 UR - https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/33668242 ID - 33668242 AB - The purpose of this presentation is to discuss previous studies, which investigate the effectiveness of music training for children with reading difficulties. A brief description of a new music training will follow. The studies which will be presented, focus on the analogy between music and language as well as the temporal and rhythmic features of music. Particular emphasis is placed on activities, such as pitch discrimination, nursery rhymes and rhythmic stimulations. All reviewed studies (1) were based on the fundamental principle of music transfer effects to linguistic aspects and the precise auditory timing hypothesis (PATH); (2) presented treatment where target group were school-aged children with reading disorder/dyslexia. The results of the studies showed significant improvement in children’s reading skills and phonological abilities; they also showed improvements in attentional processing and enhanced processing of rhythm. Even though the results indicated encouragingly positive effects on reading difficulties and their treatment, they did not shed enough light on aspects such as entrainment and improvement of phonological awareness which can explain the mechanisms leading to remediation of reading through music trainings. Considering the results of the studies reviewed, we developed a new music training protocol which emphasizes on entrainment and phonological awareness, but also considers motoric - speech synchronization and embodiment as its main focal point. This training is founded on the interaction between the elements of language and music and the principle of phonological – motoric coordination trained through music.
