BME-NVA-02, implemented with the support provided by the Ministry of Innovation and Technology of Hungary from the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund, financed under the TKP2021-2025 funding scheme. AB - This study aims to compare and evaluate various energy retrofitting strategies and methods employed in the building sector, with a focus on analysing their effectiveness and feasibility in enhancing energy efficiency. Current renovations in the EU are mostly response to policies in force; however, there is an increasing demand for renovation projects to align with the goals set for 2050. Subsidies or barriers may differ across a whole spectrum, depending on various factors, but leaving the building with the same expected outcomes. It is also important to apply measures in design phases which end in feasible and flexible execution. The paper elaborates an assessment background for the selection of studies. It identifies four main key objectives: improving energy efficiency, phasing-out of fossil fuels, increase the share of renewable energy and applying circularity. These objectives were gathered from various studies and reports, in response to which quantifiable and non-quantifiable values of three energy renovations were compared. The results highlight not only energy, financial and carbon-saving aspects but also address current retrofitting trends and climate change. Performing a comparison along these points helps to understand what drives a renovation and what can be achieved with certain inputs in the beginning. This review explores the extent to which renovation case studies vary in terms of their goal, approach, and the way results are published. It aims to help deciding whether an intervention is adequate or not, through a set of criteria presented. In this paper we address the building construction and materials, technical parameters, building location and form. The main goal is to set up a framework through examples of data collection methods for holistic energy refurbishment. The subjects of this study are two social housing buildings which belong to the 8th district Municipality in Budapest, consisting of 109 and 100 individual dwellings. On-site data was collected and building material samples were tested in the laboratory. The testing included measurements of the overall thermal transmittance of walls and heat transfer coefficient of a brick. The monitoring was conducted during a 72-hour period on-site using a heat flow meter. The research discusses the measurement process and laboratory testing results to formulate further steps and milestones during the energy renovation process of these specific and similar buildings. In households of the European Union, space heating accounts for the largest share of final energy consumption, making the method of heat production critical. Various studies estimate that approximately 120 million buildings in the EU require some form of refurbishment, either passive or active, to comply with the latest energy performance directives. Existing regulations focus primarily on efficiency and aim to reduce heat losses, suggesting the replacement of outdated systems and the upgrading of building envelopes. However, they rarely consider the environmental impact of other life cycle stages except use stage of the newly installed building elements. This situation may escalate to the point where considering the whole life cycle of an improvement or replacement is no longer justified solely by emissions and energy use. The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, and its localized regulations in Hungary impose criteria that require the renovation of existing buildings, often making compliance achievable only through heating system replacements. Hence, this study investigates the background of heating system changes in a small traditional flat, assessing their benefits in terms of emissions and energy use over the full life cycle. Part number: A AB - Contemporary commercial building’s demonstrate performance from a sustainability and environmental perspective. Usually, an appropriate energy performance is achieved using efficient mechanical systems, however the operation method with smart control is significant in the overall energy consumption. The research follows a two-year design and construction process of a commercial building where the integration of smart technology was a mandatory requirement by the owner, alongside with the prerequisites of the LEED® green building certification. The goal was to design, build and optimize the performance of the new Innovation Campus commercial office building complex using smart building solutions. The research was performed with energy modeling and dynamic simulation until completion of the building, where the design and investment decisions were constantly evaluated. The new optimized building’s performance demonstrated 42% of annual energy reduction and 34% of cost reduction according to the “ASHRAE 90.1 Appendix G” baseline Benchmark building.
