By identifying the antecendents of nepotism, namely machiavellianism and paternalism, the authors attempt to establish a solid context for examining its impact in family business succession. With applying the morally different concepts of reciprocal- and entitled nepotism an empirical attempt is demonstrated to capture the impact of nepotism on socioemotional wealth (SEW) in family businesses (FBs). Using a qualitative, interpretivist approach, two Hungarian FBs where the CEO title has been inherited are analysed through semi-structured interviews with three stakeholders: the predecessor, the successor, and a non-family employee. The findings suggest that reciprocal nepotism can strengthen SEW by fostering emotional bonds, organizational identity, and succession continuity. These insights contribute to the discourse on ethical succession planning and sustainable entrepreneurship in FBs. This research paper aims to provide deeper empirical insights, integrating stakeholder quotations, and positioning the findings within contemporary debates on family business succession and governance.}, year = {2026}, pages = {217-232} } @misc{MTMT:37029241, title = {Nepotism: Is It Really as Bad as Imagined? One area where family businesses are increasingly making an impact is in the realm of Corporate Social Responsibility. Unlike their non-family counterparts, family businesses often embed their social and ethical values deeply into their operations, which may lead to a more holistic approach to sustainability. This paper explores the relationship between family business dynamics and Corporate Social Responsibility, and investigates how family control influences Corporate Social Responsibility strategies, decision-making processes, and stakeholder engagement. By drawing on an extensive theoretical background, this study aims to provide a deeper understanding of the motivations behind sustainability initiatives in family-owned firms, particularly in the context of sustainability and community involvement. We argue that the non-financial, family-related priorities, coupled with a generational focus, provide a distinct advantage in balancing profitability with societal impact. This research contributes to the literature by offering new perspectives on how family businesses can leverage their unique attributes to enhance their public spirit efforts, fostering long-term value creation for both the business and the wider community.}, year = {2026}, pages = {12-21} } @article{MTMT:37080662, title = {Ageing Well in an Ageing Society: Sustainability and Digital Solutions Different Generations in the Digital Era. This study exploreshow differing perspectives between successors and predecessors influence the succession processwithin Hungarian family firms undergoing intra-family transition. Building on two in-depth case studies,the research adopts a qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews with both predecessors andsuccessors in each firm exploring how different perspectives can foster change in managementtakeover. Findings reveal generational tension between successors’ openness and innovative orientationtoward digital transformation and predecessors’ moderate, often cautious, stance shaped by tradition,proven practices, and perceived risks of rapid technological adoption. Despite these divergences, thestudy identifies mechanisms of reconciliation, such as innovation, shared learning, and mutual trust,which enable smoother digital improvement during succession. The analysis contributes to theunderstanding of how family firms can balance continuity and renewal by integrating differingdigitalisation mindsets across generations. The study offers theoretical and practical insights into theinterplay between technological attitudes and succession dynamics, emphasising the need forintergenerational dialogue and adaptive leadership to ensure long-term competitiveness in the era ofdigital transformation challenges.}, year = {2026}, eissn = {2786-4359} }
