The presented AE data came from the National Radioactive Waste Repository (NRWR) for low- and intermediate-level waste (LLW/ILW). AE monitoring is able to detect the pre-peak, peak, and post-peak stress changes in rock mass. The presented method used AE monitoring data to back-calculate parameters, such as uniaxial compressive strength and the rock mass deformation modulus. The AE initiation threshold was used to develop an objective function that considered the stress in the rock mass and the rock mass strength. The findings of this research propose that most AE events can be related to the crack initiation threshold, and in space, most of them are located at points away from the excavated walls. In the vicinity of the excavation damage zones around the cavities, the stress conditions beyond the crack damage boundary of the rock mass occur in many areas, leading to significant irreversible deformations. This novel method was demonstrated to aid in the prediction of rock mass strength and is a valuable, non-invasive method for improving the spatial prediction of rock mass parameters, which will lead to safer underground storage facilities. Very high P wave velocity (Vp) values were obtained during the tomographic scanning of the study area of the repository, and these were compared with existing findings of in-situ and laboratory seismic measurements.Apart from seismic tomographic survey, dynamic FEM numerical modelling, empirical calculations of residual stresses, laboratory measurements of compression wave (ultrasonic) velocities on intact rock cores, in-situ primary stress measurements as well as site geological model were integrated to evaluate the use of seismic tomography for identifying possible in-situ stress increases around the excavation.A detailed calibration modelling was carried out based on the site seismic tomography measurements and during the large-scale modelling. It was observed that the increasing Vp is directly related to simulated increasing directional loadings on the rock mass. Using a measured wave raypath it was possible to check the different in-situ stress parametrizations which resulted in the best approximation to the measured Vp values. It was concluded that the rock mass under investigation to extend the repository must have higher in-situ stress values than the area of the constructed deposition chambers nearby. The results of this research indicated that seismic tomography is a useful tool for determining relative stress around and within the vicinity of underground excavation. Preparation of final disposal has been done as part of a national program since 1993. The Central Nuclear Financial Fund and the Public Limited Company for Radioactive Waste Management (PURAM) have been established to coordinate organizations and activities for all tasks in connection, with nuclear waste treatment. The selected potential host rock is a granite complex in the Moragy Granite Formation in the south-western part of Hungary, close to the village of Bataapati. During the construction of the Bataapati radioactive waste repository the drill and blast excavation method was used. During the periodic verification of the blasting process, passive seismoacoustic monitoring systems were applied. Based on these measurements it was possible to set and supervise accurately the blasting quality in order to minimize the damage to the rock in vicinity of the tunnel contour. Cautious blasting is needed to minimize the Highly Damaged Zone. The aim of this paper is to present the measuring analysis methodologies of the acquired data. Details will be explained on the dynamic numerical modeling results, on the site-specific attenuations and the blasting effects on the extension and behavior of Excavation Damage Zones.
