AB - Dynamic line rating (DLR) is a cost-efficient method to increase transmission line transfer capacity. Its techno-economic advantages have already been presented in numerous scientific papers. At the same time, limited operational experience and financial calculations are available concerning such line monitoring projects. This paper aims to give a cost-benefit analysis of a DLR system. The costs and economic benefits of a pilot DLR project in Hungary support the theoretical concept. The paper discusses the financial indicators, capital and operating expenditures, and benefit elements in detail. The quantified and non-quantified benefits are handled separately. As a result of the calculation, it is possible to determine the viability of a DLR project. The paper's key finding is that a financially supported pilot DLR project can ensure both technical benefits and financial return on investment. © 2023 IEEE.
