So, what motivates some smallholder pastoral households to produce and participate in the livestock markets in Kenya while others do not? A Double Hurdle model was applied that involved two sequential stochastic processes. The results indicate that livestock farmers make little use of livestock markets, that prices matter with regard to the extent of participation, and that transaction costs matter both in terms of the probability and extent of participation; offering additional evidence in favor of a well-known behavioral irregularity. Policy interventions aimed at facilitating pastoralists’ access to education, productive assets such as pasture land, and at reducing transaction costs are central to stimulating pastoral farmers’ market participation and escaping semi-subsistence livestock production traps.}, year = {2019}, pages = {40-59} } @article{MTMT:30752064, title = {Estimation of stochastic production functions: the state of the art}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/30752064}, author = {Manyeki, John Kibara and Kotosz, Balázs Gyula}, doi = {10.35618/hsr2019.01.en057}, journal-iso = {HUNG STAT REV}, journal = {HUNGARIAN STATISTICAL REVIEW: JOURNAL OF THE HUNGARIAN CENTRAL STATISTICAL OFFICE}, volume = {2}, unique-id = {30752064}, issn = {2630-9130}, year = {2019}, pages = {57-89} } @article{MTMT:30671923, title = {Efficiency estimation and its role in policy recommendations: An application to the Kenyan livestock sector}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/30671923}, author = {Manyeki, John Kibara and Kotosz, Balázs Gyula}, doi = {10.1111/rsp3.12197}, journal-iso = {REG SCI POL PRAC}, journal = {REGIONAL SCIENCE POLICY & PRACTICE}, volume = {11}, unique-id = {30671923}, year = {2019}, eissn = {1757-7802}, pages = {367-381}, orcid-numbers = {Manyeki, John Kibara/0000-0002-4625-6509; Kotosz, Balázs Gyula/0000-0002-0277-9228} } @{MTMT:3322053, title = {Technical efficiency estimation in the livestock industry: Case study of the southern rangelands of Kenya}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/3322053}, author = {Manyeki, John Kibara and Kotosz, Balázs Gyula}, booktitle = {Challenges in national and international economic policies}, unique-id = {3322053}, abstract = {Measurement of the efficiency of agricultural production is an important issue in developing countries such as Kenya. A measure of producer’s performance is often useful for policy purposes, and the concept of technical efficiency provides a theoretical basis for such a measure. This study investigated factors influencing the technical inefficiency of livestock production in the southern rangelands of Kenya. Using cross-sectional household data and Maximum Likelihood Estimate technique we found that the factors contributing to the inefficiency of livestock production were years of schooling of the household, household size, access to market information and input markets. The mean technical inefficiency was higher for sheep and goats (64.98%) than cattle (1.48%) production, implying that about 65% and 2% of output of the small ruminants and cattle respectively is lost due to the misallocation of variable factors within the household.}, year = {2018}, pages = {97-114} } @article{MTMT:3324900, title = {Empirical Analysis of the Wagner Hypothesis of Government Expenditure Growth in Kenya: ARDL Modelling Approach}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/3324900}, author = {Manyeki, John Kibara and Kotosz, Balázs Gyula}, doi = {10.18096/TMP.2017.02.05}, journal-iso = {THEOR METHOD PRACT}, journal = {THEORY METHODOLOGY PRACTICE: CLUB OF ECONOMICS IN MISKOLC}, volume = {13}, unique-id = {3324900}, issn = {1589-3413}, keywords = {Kenya; Wagner's hypothesis; ARDL model}, year = {2017}, eissn = {2415-9883}, pages = {45-57} } @inproceedings{MTMT:3262303, title = {Supply Response of Livestock Products: A Farm-Level Analysis in Southern Rangelands of Kenya}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/3262303}, author = {Manyeki, John Kibara and Kotosz, Balázs Gyula}, booktitle = {Proceedings of the 6th International Conference of Economic Sciences}, unique-id = {3262303}, year = {2017}, pages = {53-66} } @inproceedings{MTMT:3231045, title = {Feedlot Finishing of Lambs for the Market: Experiences of Nturumenti Farmers, Narok County, Kenya}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/3231045}, author = {P N, Katiku and G, Keya and J M, Nginyi and Manyeki, John Kibara and C M, Mahagayu and J K, Kimutai and B P, Ogillo and R K, Kimitei and W N, Mnene and P F, Kibet}, booktitle = {Technology Options and Interventions for Improved Food Security and Livelihoods in the ASALs.
