However, adaptation to solid food after double suckling may result in inbalanced caecal microflora (dysbiosis). The effect of double nursing and early weaning on the development of the caecal microflora in rabbits was examined. In the 1(st) experiment Pannon White rabbits were reared either traditionally, e.g. suckling once a day and weaned on the 35(th) day (group E), or nursed twice a day by two does and weaned also on the 35(th) day (group K). After birth beside suckling the youngs got commercial non medicated feed (16.8% crude protein, 2.9% crude fat, 14.1% crude fiber and 10.3 MJ/kg DE) supplemented with barley and hay. in the 2(nd) experiment rabbits suckled once a day from birth until weaning at the age of 35 days and were allowed to adapt to solid feed at a normal pace (E35), or suckled twice a day by two does from birth until weaning at the age of 21 (K21) or 35 days (K35), respectively. The young rabbits were fed only on barley and hay, which were available ad libitum from the 18(th) day after birth. In the 1st experiment pH value of the caecal chyme was lower in E rabbits on the 23rd day, probably due to the earlier solid feed consumption. In the 2nd experiment pH decreased rapidly and stayed at a lower value in K21 rabbits, which could also be explained by the early weaning and early adaptation to solid feed. Neither suckling, nor early weaning had any significant effect on the aerob and anaerob germ counts. It can be supposed, that this is influenced mainly by age. Bacteroides compose the main flora of rabbits. They could be found in the caecum in a large amount (10(9)) already on the 1st week after birth. No significant differences between groups could be detected. The number of coliforms was higher in rabbits nursed twice, and showed a temporary increase around weaning. Control litters (SS) were nursed once a day for 35 days post partum (traditional method of nursing). DD litters were raised by two does and the kits were nursed both in the morning and in the evening until day 35 post partum. DS litters were nursed twice a day for 23 days, and then once a day until weaning at 35 days. Part of the DS litters were nursed at 08:00 and 20:00 h (i.e. every 12 h, DS12), the rest were nursed at 08:00 and at 16:00 h (DS8). Kits of the fifth treatment (DO) were nursed twice a day until day 23, and then immediately weaned. Rabbit kits that were nursed twice a day (DD, DS12, DS8, DO) consumed on average 1.89 more milk compared with SS individuals until day 23 (overall treatment effect P < 0.001). The 21-day body weight of these young was 1.7 times greater than that of the SS kits (overall P < 0.001). DO rabbits were weaned early and their growth curve showed a slight break at this point. However, they compensated for this lag by the end of the fattening period. SS rabbits and DD ones were respectively the first and the last to start consuming solid food. The food consumption of DS rabbits was similar to that of DD until day 23 and from then until day 35 it was not significantly different from that of SS. After having been weaned on day 23, DO kits consumed only very small quantities of pellets for 2 days. Afterwards their food intake increased abruptly. Rabbits that were nursed twice a day (DD, DS12, DS8 and DO) consumed more food as compared with the SS individuals throughout the total period of fattening (157 v. 137 g/day; P < 0.05). The weight at 10 weeks of age was 2.49 v. 2.88 kg (overall P < 0.001), respectively for SS and double-nursed (DD, DS, DO) rabbits. Nursing twice a day did not affect dressing proportion but the proportion of the carcass in the front part of the body decreased slightly (318 v. 323 g/kg; P < 0.05) while that in intermediate part increased (321 v. 307 g/kg, P < 0.05). Nevertheless, rabbits that were nursed twice a day had more (P < 0.05) perirenal + scapular fat and produced heavier livers. Total fat content of the empty body, however, was not significantly higher, with the one exception of the DD rabbits which had higher levels than any other group. The results of our experiment show clearly that the growth potential of rabbit kits is strongly limited by the milk availability during the first weeks post partum. At the age of 23, 30, 37 and 44 days, 8 young per treatment were euthanised. Double suckling and the subsequent higher level of solid feed intake after weaning were found to exert a stronger influence on the weight of the entire gastrointestinal tract and that of its individual parts (the stomach, small intestine, caecum and colon) than on its length. The quantity of the gastric content was found to rise with advancing age in both groups (from 36 to 70 g and from 37.5 to 79 g). In both groups the pH of the stomach was higher during the suckling period (4.5-5.3) than subsequent to weaning (1.6-2.4). The quantity of the caecal content also increased with age (from 4 or 8 g), but on the 37th day significantly higher quantities of caecal content were recorded in DD rabbits (50.5 g compared with 35 g). The pH of the caecal content decreased more slowly from an initial high value (6.0 and 6.5 in SS and DD rabbits, respectively), and by the 37th day had settled at a low value (5.7-5.8) in both groups. The dry matter content of the caecal content decreased from 270-273 g to 188-207 g in both groups. Total volatile fatty acid (tVFA) and acetic acid (C2) concentration, which amounted to 66-88% of tVFA, rose; in SS rabbits they were at higher levels by the 30th day (53.6 and 42.2 mmol/L, respectively), and remained at an increased level until the 44th day (P < 0.05). The ratio of C3: C4 was high on the 23rd day (2.5 and 2.4), but dropped at the age of 30 days (0.5 in SS and 1.7 in DD, P < 0.05) and, further, by the 37th day (0.2 in SS). In SS rabbits coliform count proved significantly lower (105) on the 23rd day than in DD rabbits (106). By the 37th day this count had decreased in both groups and subsequently remained at a low level (<10(4)). By the 23rd day Bacteroides were present in large quantities (10(8)) in the caecum and showed no change with advancing age or feeding regime.
