Fungal biomass can be obtained easily in high quantities as a waste of biofermentation processes, and used in a complex, multi-phase solution mimicking naturally occurring, mining-affected water samples. With test solution formulated after natural conditions, formation of secondary Al and Fe phases co-precipitating Ce was recorded in addition to specific biosorption of rare earth elements. Remarkably, the latter were removed from the solution despite the presence of high concentrations of interfering Fe and Al. The biomass was viable even after prolonged incubation in the metal solution, and minimal inhibitory concentrations for single metals were higher than those in the test solution. While precipitation/biosorption of Ce (maximal biosorption efficiency was 58.0 ± 22.3% after 6 h of incubation) coincided with the gross removal of Fe from the metal solution, Y (81.5 ± 11.3% efficiency, 24 h incubation) and Nd (87.4 ± 9.1% efficiency, 24 h incubation) were sequestered later, similarly to Ni and Zn. The biphasic binding pattern specific to single metals could be connected to dynamically changing pH and NH4 + concentrations, which were attributed to the physiological changes taking place in starving A. oryzae biomass. The metals were found extracellularly in minerals associated with the cell wall, and intracellularly precipitated in the vacuoles. The latter process was explained with intracellular metal detoxification resulting in metal resistance.}, keywords = {bioremediation; biosorption; Rare earth metals; Uranium mine; biomining}, year = {2021}, eissn = {1479-487X}, pages = {3725-3735}, orcid-numbers = {Pusztahelyi, Tünde/0000-0002-5495-6273} } @article{MTMT:30711072, title = {Elemental Analysis of Human Blood Serum by Microwave Plasma—Investigation of the Matrix Effects Caused by Sodium Using Model Solutions}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/30711072}, author = {Baranyai, Edina and Tóth, Csilla Noémi and Fábián, István}, doi = {10.1007/s12011-019-01743-1}, journal-iso = {BIOL TRACE ELEM RES}, journal = {BIOLOGICAL TRACE ELEMENT RESEARCH}, volume = {194}, unique-id = {30711072}, issn = {0163-4984}, abstract = {Human blood is a complex sample matrix when elemental analysis is considered. In this study, the effects of Na, a natural component of serum samples, was investigated in the quantitative determination of Ca, K, Mg, Cu, Zn, and Fe by microwave plasma atomic emission spectrometry. The robustness of the microwave plasma was tested by evaluating MgII 280.271 nm/MgI 285.213 nm by varying two adjustable operating parameters, the read time, and the nebulizer pressure. The read time has no influence on the robustness while the MgII/MgI ratio decreased when the nebulizer pressure was increased during the analysis. The threshold concentrations of the interfering Na were determined at the analytical lines used for the measurement of other elements. The matrix effect of the commercially available microwave plasma was studied by a series of model experiments with human blood. The increasing concentration of Na in the matrix within the normal ranges reported for blood serum increased the intensities of the measured atomic lines. According to a factorial design—where two applied factors were the concentration of Na matrix and the measured elements as well as their levels were considered as factorial points—it was found that the Na concentration in a serum sample after acid digestion and 10 times dilution affected the intensity values of the measured elements. For Ca, Cu, and Fe, a statistically significant effect was observed, while for Zn, Mg, and K, an interaction effect was also found. However, after calculating the percentage errors caused by the shift, the relative difference was observed to be quite small (< 10%).}, year = {2020}, eissn = {1559-0720}, pages = {13-23} } @article{MTMT:30618673, title = {Szintetikus fürdővizek makro- és mikroelem tartalmának vizsgálata}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/30618673}, author = {Lós, Réka and Izbékiné Szabolcsik, Andrea and Ungvári, Csaba and Tóth, Csilla Noémi and Baranyai, Edina and Bodnár, Ildikó}, doi = {10.21791/IJEMS.2019.2.7.}, journal-iso = {IJEMS MMTK}, journal = {INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT SCIENCES / MŰSZAKI ÉS MENEDZSMENT TUDOMÁNYI KÖZLEMÉNYEK}, volume = {4}, unique-id = {30618673}, issn = {2498-700X}, abstract = {Vizsgálataink során szintetikusan előállított fürdővizek mikro-és makroelem tartalmát elemeztük. The modified bentonites were examined with X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The rare earth (REE) and Fe(III) ion content in bentonite was higher than the CEC values obtained by ammonium acetate method related to trivalent ions (2.7 x 10(-4) mol g(-1)). The kinetics, equilibrium time, sorption isotherms and desorption experiments were examined. Lanthanum, yttrium and cerium bentonite can bind similar amount of arsenite(III) ions. Iron-bentonite cannot bind significant amounts of arsenite ions. The active sites and the solubilities of the sorption complex were determined. Arsenite (III) ions sorb in the interlayer space as REEAsO3. The solubility of the arsenite complex was two orders of magnitude smaller than that of the phosphate complex. After desorption the eluted amount of arsenite (III) was 55% related to the sorbed amount of arsenite. The d(001) basal spacing of modified bentonites and that of after sorption and desorption was measured. After the sorption of arsenite ion on lanthanum bentonite, the d(001) basal spacing of montmorillonite was decreased and after desorption an increase in d(001) basal spacing was observed again. Two sample preparation methods were compared (open vessel digestion on a hot plate and closed vessel microwave assisted digestion) for the BCR sample and EDTA extraction was carried out. The recoveries were tested by MP-AES and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) method to investigate whether the more cost-effective nitrogen supplied microwave plasma is appropriate for the elemental determination of digested organic rich soil samples. The BCR 700 sample was not certified for digestion methods yet similar sample pretreatment is present in the literature with which a good agreement was found. Our results also correlated with the values provided in the certification of the BCR 700 material for EDTA extraction. It was found that the microwave plasma is an effective and low-cost alternative of ICP-OES for soil analysis and with the convenient atmospheric digestion even the organic rich soil samples can be prepared prior to the elemental determination. However, the microwave assisted digestion is faster and easier to conduct. The limit of detection values of the measured elements by MP-AES are sufficiently low for the micro element determination of soils (Cd 70 µg kg-1, Cr 5 µg kg-1, Cu 25 µg kg-1, Mn 12.5 µg kg-1, Ni 45 µg kg-1, Pb 220 µg kg-1, Zn 155 µg kg-1). © 2017, Universitatea Babes-Bolyai, Catedra de Filosofie Sistematica. Several studies showed that the trace element homeostasis and also the levels of antioxidant plasma proteins are changed in autoimmune disorders; however, these results are controversial. In this study, the potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) concentrations of the serum and proteins-immunoglobulin G (IgG), transferrin (Trf), albumin (Alb), and ceruloplasmin (Cp)-separated from serum samples by affinity chromatography were determined in patients with SLE and SS. Ca and K levels were found to be decreased in the case of both disorders compared to the control group, and the competitive antagonism of Cu and Zn was also observed: elevated Cu concentration together with a lower Zn concentration was measured in the sera of patients with autoimmune diseases. After fractionation, the trace element concentration of protein containing fractions altered to that of the control group. In case of the autoimmune disorders, the highest Cu concentration was determined in the Alb-containing protein fractions while the Zn level decreased in the Alb and increased in the Cp as well as in the IgG- and Trf-containing fractions compared to the healthy samples.
