The research was necessary to prepare the documentation for the restoration project of the monument focusing on the north-western tower. Two sections were excavated around the tower, one inside the tower and one outside. During the archaeological investigations, we had the opportunity to identify elements of the medieval fortress with stone walls and structures of the baroque castle, with features which helped to establish chronology. The archaeological finds came from the prehistoric settlement, the medieval fortress and the Baroque castle. The town of Carei was commercial and administrative center of the area during the Middle Ages. The archaeological research was carried out on a rather big plot (3027 sqm) situated close to the medieval nucleus of the settlement and the castle. 90 archeological features were discovered; five of them dates to the late Middle Ages (15th to 16th century), while the majority are from the modern and recent period: 17th to 18th cent, and the turn of the 19th and 20th cent. Discoveries include fragment of ceramic vessels, stove tiles, tools and a great number of animal bones. The settlement of Pir was mentioned the earliest in 1205, and it became a central place of the region during the early modern period. The buttresses and the polygonal plan of the sanctuary attest the medieval origin of the church. Although modern interventions and numerous burials have limited the research possibilities, an early phase of the nave has been identified, which corresponds to the middle area of the current one. This early nave was widened to the east with the current sanctuary, still in the medieval period, the sanctuary having a polygonal enclosure and supported by buttresses. In a more recent period, during the premodern period, extensive restorations were carried out in the church, the floor-level being raised by approx. 1.20 m. The nave was widened to the west at the time of restoration or later. Older foundations have also been discovered in the sanctuary, which belong to an earlier phase, probably corresponding to the early nave. During the Middle Ages, the town of Satu Mare consisted of two settlements with their own administration. The area affected by the construction project is in the center part of the town of Mintiu/Németi, which is located north of the present city. On this occasion, we were able to investigate three areas covering an area of 998 square meters. During the work we were able to identify 28 archaeological features. Most of them can be dated to the 18th to 19th centuries, but in area S1 we found four features dating to the 14th to 16th centuries. The annexes identified in S1 shed light on the layout and topography of the medieval and pre-modern topography of the town, as their orientation towards the state front indicates that the north-south running Ady-Endre Street functioned as the main street of Mintiu over the centuries. The settlement was mentioned the earliest in 1246 gaining urban privileges. The present-day Calvinist church is built in late Gothic style and preserves valuable artistic details. During the archaeological research in the interior, foundations of an earlier church with semicircular apse was discovered, dating from the second half of the 13th century. To the west, part of an even earlier structure was revealed. On the exterior, on the northern part, foundations of the demolished sacristy were discovered, together with two annexes of the church. There were medieval and early modern burials inside and around the church, but they disturbed each other and part of them was liquidated during the modern period. One of the graves contained a sliver ear-ring with S-shaped and six beads; other discovered artifacts include a golden ear-ring with S-shaped end, a bronze bell, pottery with stamped motif, fragments of stovetiles and of the demolished vault of the nave. The first written mention of the village dates back to 1302. The village church was first mentioned in 1334 in the list of papal tithe. The church was renovated and partially rebuilt in 1869. Recent research has provided information about the construction phases of the building. In section S1/2023, foundations made of medieval brick were discovered, indicating that the nave and the pillar were built in the Gothic period. The burial under the foundation of the nave indicates an earlier church in the area. In section S2/2023 it became clear that the pillar and the sanctuary date from the modern period, and the foundation of the sacristy was discovered. The sites of their discovery are located in present-day north-western Romania, once situated in medieval Kingdom of Hungary, but they originate from the territories of the former Holy Roman Empire. The sword was dated to the period between 1250 and 1350, considering its typology and the inscription; while the cauldron was dated to the fourteenth and fifteenth century. Their way to the place where were discovered is not clear, but certainly they are important witnesses of the long-distance relations between Germany and the former north-eastern parts of medieval Hungary. In order to assess the nature of these long distance-relations, the historical contexts of the artefacts are examined, and several possible interpretations analyzed. LA - English DB - MTMT ER -
