Of particular interest to grid-tied operation are those controllers that can mimic the inertial behavior of the conventional synchronous machines since the decrease of inertia will pose a serious issue in future power grids. These controllers are called VSM - Virtual Synchronous Machines, a family the synchronverter control concept is part of. In this paper we strive for augmenting the foundations of the synchronverter control and parameter tuning method already laid down in [1] by introducing the filter capacitor and the resistances into the small-signal model. Using parameters determined based on small-signal stability calculations we show how the synchronverter is capable of islanded and grid-connected operation, synchronizing to the grid via a synchronizing impedance. The controller is tested on a power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) simulator with an emulated external grid capable of giving frequency response.
