However, more research must be conducted on the interactive or combined effects of salinity and temperature stress on maize germination. This study aims to determine the impact of combined temperature and salinity stress on 16 different maize varieties. The maize seeds were incubated at three different temperatures (15 °C, 20 °C, and 35 °C) and two sodium chloride (NaCl) levels (0 mM and 100 mM) simultaneously. Germination percentage, root and shoot growth, root:shoot length ratio, and seed vigor index (SVI) were recorded and analyzed. The presence of salinity reduced maize germination qualities at all three temperatures tested. However, at high 35 °C temperatures, significant reductions in germination performances were observed compared to lower temperatures with salt stress. Three varieties (V1, V10, and V16) had the best overall germination performance in all three temperatures under saline stress, while V4, V5, V12, and V14 showed higher salt tolerance at 35 °C than at lower temperatures. In conclusion, increased temperature amplifies the salt stress in maize germination, and the varietal effect influences the seed tolerance towards a combination of salt and temperature stress.}, year = {2023}, eissn = {2077-0472}, orcid-numbers = {Kende, Zoltán/0000-0001-5515-1314} } @inproceedings{MTMT:34150969, title = {The role of temperature on the germination activity of leguminous crops exposed to saline conditions}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/34150969}, author = {Khalid, Noriza Binti and Haj Sghaier, Asma and Jolánkai, Márton and Balla, István}, booktitle = {XXIX. The local and international impacts on the national practice are summarized, and some adoption of the conservation tillage results is presented concerning Hungary. The interest in conservation agriculture in Hungary dates back almost 120 years; however, any significant changes only occurred in the last 50 years. Interestingly, the factors of progress and restraint in tillage have appeared simultaneously over the years. Among the factors restraining tillage progress, the most retarding were the beliefs that have existed for many decades, as soil conservation was not considered nor was the need to mitigate climate-related hazards. Progress was driven by the commitment to soil protection, the opportunity to raise farming standards, and the need to mitigate climate-related threats. Since the average yield in Hungary was usually sufficient for the domestic need, the main objective of crop production was to avoid yield loss. Long-term experimental data and monitoring results were considered for this study. The impacts of new tillage solutions, elaborated in foreign countries, on tillage modernization were reviewed. The experiences and first results in no-till (direct drilling) and strip-tillage showed that difficulties can gradually be reduced through site-specific technology solutions. The need for subsoiling is not a matter of debate nowadays but rather the timing of operation and the investigation of the duration of the effects. Due to its complex advantages, tine tillage occupies an increasing rank among soil conservation systems. The area of ploughed soils has decreased; however, improved implementation is required.}, year = {2023}, eissn = {2073-4395}, orcid-numbers = {Bozóki, Boglárka/0000-0003-2548-1042; Birkás, Márta/0000-0001-5489-0166} } @article{MTMT:32770677, title = {The Effect of Temperature and Water Stresses on Seed Germination and Seedling Growth of Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/32770677}, author = {Khaeim, Hussein and Kende, Zoltán and Balla, István and Gyuricza, Csaba and Eser, Adnan and Tarnawa, Ákos}, doi = {10.3390/su14073887}, journal-iso = {SUSTAINABILITY-BASEL}, journal = {SUSTAINABILITY}, volume = {14}, unique-id = {32770677}, year = {2022}, eissn = {2071-1050}, orcid-numbers = {Khaeim, Hussein/0000-0001-7262-1445; Kende, Zoltán/0000-0001-5515-1314} } @article{MTMT:32574552, title = {Hátráltató és előrevivő tényezők a hazai talajművelésben}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/32574552}, author = {Birkás, Márta and Balla, István and Gyuricza, Csaba and Kende, Zoltán and Kovács, Gergő Péter and Percze, Attila}, doi = {10.1556/0088.2021.00102}, journal-iso = {AGROKÉMIA ÉS TALAJTAN}, journal = {AGROKÉMIA ÉS TALAJTAN}, volume = {70}, unique-id = {32574552}, issn = {0002-1873}, year = {2021}, eissn = {1588-2713}, pages = {155-170}, orcid-numbers = {Birkás, Márta/0000-0001-5489-0166; Kende, Zoltán/0000-0001-5515-1314} } @inproceedings{MTMT:31969265, title = {Impact of crop residues on soil water evaporation in weighing lysimeters}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/31969265}, author = {Jancsó, Mihály and Balla, István and Valkovszki, Noémi Júlia and Bozán, Csaba and Pauk, János}, booktitle = {19. Crop residues as mulches can protect soil moisture by covering soil surface and thus reducing evaporation. We studied the effect of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) straw on the soil water evaporation and on the emergence of weed plants. Five precision weighing lysimeters were used at the NAIK ÖVKI Lysimeter Station Szarvas, Hungary. We have measured retention of water by the winter wheat residue after the application of 0.41 kg*m-2, 0.63 kg*m-2 and 0.84 kg*m-2 wheat straw, respectively. Our results demonstrated that crop residues can reduce the evaporation from soil to 62.12-81.92% compared to the ET of bare field of stubble. These results provide complementary information to those gained by the colleagues at the Research Institute of Karcag where the effect of different soil surface formations and coverings on the water balance of the soil was determined.
