While the novel is fundamentally a feminist retelling of George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), the article argues that it also draws extensively on developments within YA dystopias over the past seven decades, especially in its portrayal of the intertwined coming-of-age trajectories of its two protagonists, Julia and Vicky. The analysis further highlights the novel’s allusions to canonical works such as Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, and James Joyce’s Ulysses. These intertexts—each offering depictions of women shaped by male authors—complicate the novel’s feminist project: by invoking and reframing them, Newman both critiques the patriarchal literary canon and positions Julia within a broader lineage of narratives concerned with the constraints imposed on women. Finally, the article identifies a biblical layer that offers a distinctive solution to the central dystopian problem of hope, suggesting forgiveness and love as potential antidotes to the forms of damnation totalitarian systems attempt to impose on their subjects.}, year = {2026}, eissn = {2459-5160}, pages = {9-27}, orcid-numbers = {Maczelka, Csaba/0009-0008-1344-1266} } @article{MTMT:37410263, title = {Recycling and Compilation Techniques in Francis Kirkman’s Psittacorum Regio (1669) and Richard Steere’s The Travels of Don Francisco de Quevedo (1684): Two Rewritings of Joseph Hall’s Mundus alter et idem (1605)}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/37410263}, author = {Maczelka, Csaba}, doi = {10.14198/raei.31093}, journal-iso = {ALICANTE J ENGL STUD}, journal = {REVISTA ALICANTINA DE ESTUDIOS INGLESES / ALICANTE JOURNAL OF ENGLISH STUDIES}, volume = {45}, unique-id = {37410263}, issn = {0214-4808}, abstract = {This paper offers a detailed comparative investigation of two recycled versions of Joseph Hall’s Mundus alter et idem (1605) with the purpose of demonstrating the widespread use of compilation as a textual strategy in late seventeenth-century prose fiction. Hall’s satirical travelogue is first reissued by Francis Kirkman in 1669 with no reference to its original author, combining the original with new sources and introducing numerous structural changes as well. Altogether, Kirkman’s compilation seems to focus more on the selective recycling and rearrangement of already existing sources, with no significant individual additions. The second recycled version was published in 1684, and it is proposed here that its previously unidentified author might be the lesser-known American poet Richard Steere. Steere’s compilation technique shows significant differences from Kirkman’s. He adds new paratextual materials and inserts a poem in his version. The new paratexts present the text as a translation of Francisco de Quevedo’s Spanish original, a completely fictional attribution, which, however, reflects the immense popularity of the Spaniard’s works in England. Based on an in-depth comparative analysis of the two later versions, and a thorough exploration of their intertextual backgrounds and literary contexts, the article situates the recycled editions within the changing requirements of the Restoration book market.}, year = {2026}, eissn = {2171-861X}, pages = {99-121}, orcid-numbers = {Maczelka, Csaba/0009-0008-1344-1266} } @book{MTMT:37515894, title = {Forced Apart and Brought Together Selected Papers from SPECHEL Conferences}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/37515894}, isbn = {9786150262505}, editor = {Rouse, Andrew Clifford and Hartvig, Gabriella and Maczelka, Csaba}, publisher = {SPECHEL e-ditions}, unique-id = {37515894}, year = {2026}, orcid-numbers = {Maczelka, Csaba/0009-0008-1344-1266} } @article{MTMT:36120177, title = {Thomas Nashe and Late Elizabethan Writing.
