Adaptation seems to be an optimal way ofpreparing fire services for new challenges related to climate change. An analysis of this adaptationallows investigating effective organizational and highly implementable solutions in this context.From a methodological viewpoint, the research is based on the following 4-step approach: a) ananalysis of the fire service domain in Poland and Hungary; b) an analysis of the determinants forfire service operation as related to climate change in the chosen countries; c) forecasting of climatechange consequences for fire services in Poland and Hungary; and d) formulation of adaptationassumptions. The fire service domains in Poland and Hungary are similar enough to considercommon adaptation methods to climate change consequences. Climate change does not directlyshape the operation of fire services in these countries, but rather serves as a source of importantconsiderations. The determinants comprise both naturally triggered and man-made hazards, andthey may increase in number and severity due to climate change. The adaptation should involveoperational organization, equipment and personal safety as well as operational continuity, effectivecooperation and the employment of modern technologies for rapid detection and analysis ofmultiple hazards, in such a way forming a common operational picture that enhances situational awareness. Protective clothing must not only provide protection during firefighting, but also against other environmental effects. The purpose of the article is for the authors to propose possible directions for development along with a description of the material and ergonomic characteristics of the personal protective clothing worn by firefighters. After processing the related Hungarian and international literature, the authors present all the material properties that serve as the basis for the protective ability of protective clothing. Based on these, the reader can deepen their knowledge within this topic. At the end of the article,the authors offer solutions and suggestions, in order to increase the resistance of the firefighting protective clothing and, in addition, to improve the ergonomic characteristics.
