In the present review, altogether 14 ecosystem services provided by silica-scaled chrysophytes were identified highlighting their importance and roles in aquatic ecosystems. The most important supporting services are related to primary production, nutrient- and biogeochemical cycling, as well as sediment formation. Additionally, they are involved in the regulation of climate, maintenance of air quality, biological control and water purification processes (as regulating services). The most relevant provisioning services include their usefulness in environmental monitoring (paleolimnology, ecological status assessment and climate modelling), production of biochemicals and provision of genetic resources. Cultural services are associated with aesthetic values, inspiration source and knowledge system as well. Although silica-scaled chrysophytes are one of the least studied groups of algae, here they are shown to provide important benefits and to have many further powerful opportunities for humans, thus their detailed research in the future is emphasised as an important key for human well-being.}, year = {2023}, eissn = {1573-5117}, pages = {2735-2756}, orcid-numbers = {Lengyel, Edina/0000-0003-3936-4154; Padisák, Judit/0000-0001-8285-2896; Stenger-Kovács, Csilla/0000-0001-6175-4904} } @article{MTMT:3099298, title = {A 2015-ös év algája szavazás jelöltjei [The Algae of the Year 2015 – Candidates of the election]}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/3099298}, author = {Bácsiné Béres, Viktória and Nagy-László, Zsolt and Török-Krasznai, Enikő and Stenger-Kovács, Csilla and Barreto, Sára and Kiss, Gábor and Buczkó, Krisztina and Abonyi, András}, doi = {10.17542/21.148}, journal-iso = {KITAIBELIA}, journal = {KITAIBELIA}, volume = {21}, unique-id = {3099298}, issn = {1219-9672}, year = {2016}, eissn = {2064-4507}, pages = {148-158}, orcid-numbers = {Stenger-Kovács, Csilla/0000-0001-6175-4904; Abonyi, András/0000-0003-0593-5932} } @article{MTMT:1756005, title = {The silica-scaled chrysophyte flora of Hungary}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/1756005}, author = {Barreto, Sára}, journal-iso = {NOVA HEDWIGIA}, journal = {NOVA HEDWIGIA}, volume = {128}, unique-id = {1756005}, issn = {0029-5035}, abstract = {The silica-scaled chrysophytes have never been in the focus of Hungarian phytoplankton investigations. The aim of the present study is therefore to explore the occurrence and distribution of this alga group in Hungary. Thirty-three localities were sampled in the country in April, September and October 1999. Among the sampled sites there are fishponds, recreation lakes, reservoirs, swamps, forest ponds, etc. Physical and chemical parameters (temperature, pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids, total nitrogen, total phosphorous, chlorophyll-a content) were measured on the day of sampling. As a result a remarkably rich and diverse scaled-chrysophyte flora (45 Mallomonas, 8 Synura, 2 Chrysosphaerella, 5 Spiniferomons, 19 Paraphysomonas, 1 Polylepidomonas species) has been found. Of the eighty species 45 are new records to Hungary and 3 are new to the world (Mallomonas formosa, M. cucullata, M. tubulosa). Characterization of the Hungarian silica-scaled chrysophyte flora is established based on relative occurrences of the species. The most common species in Hungary (e. g. Paraphysomonas vestita, Synura petersenii, Mallomonas annulata, M. alata) are cosmopolitan or widely distributed ones. Some have globally scattered occurrence (e.g. M. insignis, M. lelymene, M. retifera, M. alata f. hualvensis, S. petersenii f. praefracta, S. mollispina), one was endemic for another continent (M. inornata). Most of the species prefer cool to cold water, or have no special preference for temperature, though some tropical elements also occur (e.g. Mallomonas mangofera f. foveata, M. peronoides). Seasonal differences are observed concerning the number and composition of species. Both the species number and the relative frequency of occurrences were much higher during spring than in the autumn period. The characteristic scaled-chrysophyte flora of some localities in protected areas (Hortobagy National Park, Pilis/Visegrad Mountains) is given, providing valuable information for the urgent need of nature conservation. A unique assemblage of species was found in the acidic temporary forest ponds of Pilis/Visegrdd Mountains (e.g. Mallomonas clavus, M. doignonii, Paraphysomonas undulata), the type localities of the 3 endemic species.}, keywords = {ECOLOGY; distribution; biogeography; silica-scaled chrysophytes}, year = {2005}, eissn = {2363-7188}, pages = {11-41} } @inbook{MTMT:1756016, title = {Chrysophyceae osztály}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/1756016}, author = {Barreto, Sára}, booktitle = {Algológiai praktikum}, unique-id = {1756016}, year = {2004}, pages = {96-111} } @{MTMT:1214813, title = {Colonization process of the epilithon in a shallow lake (Lake Balaton) at Tihany, Hungary.}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/1214813}, author = {Ács, Éva and Barreto, Sára and Ector, L and Lakatos, Gy}, booktitle = {Proceedings of the 15th International Diatom Symposium}, unique-id = {1214813}, year = {2002}, pages = {125}, orcid-numbers = {Ács, Éva/0000-0003-1774-157X} } @article{MTMT:1755983, title = {Three new Mallomonas species (Synurophyceae) from a mountain area in North-Hungary}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/1755983}, author = {Barreto, Sára}, doi = {10.1111/j.1756-1051.2001.tb00794.x}, journal-iso = {NORD J BOT}, journal = {NORDIC JOURNAL OF BOTANY}, volume = {21}, unique-id = {1755983}, issn = {0107-055X}, abstract = {Three new species of silica-scaled chrysophytes were found in a mountain area in North-Hungary. The most abundant species were Paraphysomonas vestita, Synurapetersenii and Mallomonas alpina, all three widely distributed, cosmopolitan species.
