Radio frequency identification with passive integrated transponder tagging was used to collect data on the upstream passage. A total of 2976 tagged individuals were included in the study; 2863 individuals were either barbel ( Barbus barbus ), nase ( Chondrostoma nasus ) or chub ( Squalius cephalus ), which were chosen as model species, and 113 individuals belonged to four other species. There were 540 individuals of the model species and 18 individuals of the other species detected while successfully ascending one of the fishways. The time‐to‐event (survival) analysis of the data of the model species revealed significant species‐specific differences in passage probability between the fishways. The passage probabilities of the barbel were the highest, and those of the nase were the lowest at all three fishways. The findings demonstrate that single‐species evaluations can lead to incorrect conclusions on fishway effectiveness. Technical fishways can be as effective as nature‐like ones, and hybrid solutions (technical fishways combined with nature‐like bypasses) can function as well. The limitations of the study and recommendations for further evaluations are also discussed.}, year = {2024}, eissn = {1535-1467}, pages = {1-12}, orcid-numbers = {Sály, Péter/0000-0002-3936-2063} } @article{MTMT:34688409, title = {Színes előadások a XIX. During daytime, point abundance sampling was applied to catch the fish, and environmental data were recorded at the sampling points (microhabitat features) and along the transects that crossed the sampling points (mesohabitat features). Variance partitioning revealed similar patterns in the size-classified fish data for the two streams. Microhabitat features had a greater explained variance than mesohabitat features. The majority of the mesohabitat influence emerged as variance shared with the microhabitat influence. The pure spatially explained variance proportion was lower than the variance explained purely by the environmental features (meso and micro together), and no temporally explained variance was found. Many species showed body size-related environmental associations. The results suggest that the different-scale habitat features act in a hierarchical way on the within-reach fish distribution. Meso-scale features may determine a great proportion of the micro-scale habitat variability and micro-scale conditions may directly affect how fish select places to stay as a function of both species identity and body size. The restoration of meso-scale environmental diversity can effectively contribute to the protection of size-structured populations in sub-mountainous and highland streams.}, keywords = {microhabitat use; length-frequency distribution; fine spatial scale; ontogenetic habitat shift; ontogenetic niche narrowing; size classification}, year = {2023}, eissn = {1600-0633}, pages = {656-372}, orcid-numbers = {Sály, Péter/0000-0002-3936-2063} } @article{MTMT:33845493, title = {Hydrology is a major influence on amphibian abundance in a large European floodplain}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/33845493}, author = {Hamer, Andrew and Czeglédi, István and Gál, Blanka and Sály, Péter and Szalóky, Zoltán and Preiszner, Bálint and Erős, Tibor}, doi = {10.1111/fwb.14104}, journal-iso = {FRESHWATER BIOL}, journal = {FRESHWATER BIOLOGY}, volume = {68}, unique-id = {33845493}, issn = {0046-5070}, year = {2023}, eissn = {1365-2427}, pages = {1303-1318}, orcid-numbers = {Sály, Péter/0000-0002-3936-2063} } @article{MTMT:33575179, title = {Effects of a nuclear power plant warmwater outflow on environmental conditions and fish assemblages in a very large river (the Danube, Hungary)}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/33575179}, author = {Füstös, Vivien and Sály, Péter and Szalóky, Zoltán and Tóth, Balázs and Vitál, Zoltán and Specziár, András and Fleit, Gábor and Baranya, Sándor and Józsa, János and Erős, Tibor}, doi = {10.1002/eco.2512}, journal-iso = {ECOHYDROLOGY}, journal = {ECOHYDROLOGY}, volume = {16}, unique-id = {33575179}, issn = {1936-0584}, abstract = {Direct or indirect effects of nuclear power plants' (NPPs) warmwater effluents on the structure of biotic assemblages are poorly known in very large rivers. We examined changes in physical habitat structure, temperature condition and their possible effects on the structure of Danubian fish assemblages due to the outflow of the Paks NPP's warmwater channel, in Hungary. Seasonal surveys conducted both upstream and downstream from the outfall showed that its hydromorphological effects were generally local and comparable to natural or other anthropogenic hydromorphological changes. The effect of the returned cooling water was more apparent in the seasonally recorded surface water temperatures and depended highly on the spatial positioning of the sampling sites. However, environmental and spatial variables accounted only for a low amount of variance in case of both shoreline and offshore fish assemblage data. Overall, we found that the outflow exerted only a local scale effect on the structure of Danubian fish assemblages. Rather, fish assemblages varied largely both inshore and offshore, which dynamics overruled any effects of the artificially elevated temperature. Our study highlights the importance of the assessment of hydrogeomorphological variability of rivers and their influence on fish assemblage variability when examining spatial effects of thermal pollution.}, keywords = {SUBSTRATE; fish; Danube River; habitat use; geomorphology; thermal pollution}, year = {2023}, eissn = {1936-0592}, orcid-numbers = {Sály, Péter/0000-0002-3936-2063; Baranya, Sándor/0000-0001-5832-9683; Józsa, János/0000-0001-7119-7697} } @article{MTMT:33681477, title = {Jelenkori és jövőbeni kutatások kapcsolata: halfaunisztikai szakirodalmi áttekintések módszertani nehézségei és az egységes faunisztikai közlés jelentősége}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/33681477}, author = {Maroda, Ágnes and Sály, Péter}, journal-iso = {PISCES HUNGARICI}, journal = {PISCES HUNGARICI}, volume = {16}, unique-id = {33681477}, issn = {1789-1329}, year = {2022}, pages = {33-44}, orcid-numbers = {Sály, Péter/0000-0002-3936-2063} }
