A common point in these studies is that they applied the segmentation of the sound recordings manually. The aim of the segmentation is to find the real crying sounds. As there are some special properties in crying sounds, the typical Voice Activity Detection methods are not suitable for this segmentation. In this study the authors will introduce two novel methods by the modification of the Harmonic Product Spectrum method, which can be used for the segmentation of the crying sounds. The managing of human factors needs the control, recording and monitoring of the most important vital parameters of the driver. Our aim was to develop a sensor-network which is able to monitor the vital physiological parameters of a driver. The paper presents the three components of this system: the main part, an ECG recording device, than a pulseoximeter and the monitoring software. There are two main attributes of these algorithms: exactness and calculation time. A considerable part of the algorithms are based on the well-known Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT). The Smoothed Spectrum Method is an FFT based process, which was developed for the F0 detection of recorded voice signals especially the infant cry. As it will be shown the SSM provides a better accuracy than regular FFT based algorithms or the Autocorrelation Function. In case of sound recordings in noisy environment the modified SSM is able to recognize significant noise components in the recorded signal. A further advantage of SSM is that additional information of the analyzed signal can be given to improve the performance of the method. In this study the author determined by computerized algorithms the melody of 2762 crying sounds from 316 infants, and compared the results between infants with hearing disorders and normal hearing. The analysis of the crying sounds is aimed to work out a new, cheaper hearing screening method, which would give a new potential to the early detection of hearing disorders. All the applied steps were developed by automatic, computer-executed methods providing reproducible, objective results in contradistinction to some previous studies, which had applied manual methods and reached subjective results. Several possible ways for digital signal processing of the infant cry are discussed. A novel melody shape classification system was created to obtain a more precise distribution of the melodies by their shapes. The system determined 77 different categories, where the first 20 categories covered the 95% of the melodies. The applied methods were created and tested in a huge number of melodies. # 2007 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. A new, non-invasive diagnostic tool could be created, if these connections were fully discovered. Various reports have already dealt with the analysis of the crying sound for physiological, psychic, physical, developmental, etc. reasons. In these studies characteristic attributes of the infant cry were obtained and analyzed. In the time domain mostly absolute and normalized durations, in the frequency domain frequency components, intervals were determined. The melody of crying was analyzed occasionally as there were no exact methods for categorizing the shapes of the melodies. In this paper the authors introduce a new system for categorizing the melodies. By this system the analysis of the melodies can be evaluated in an easy and objective way that it could be included in further biomedical researches dealing with the infant cry.
