Intensification of farming practices generally reduces species and functional diversity of terrestrial invertebrates, which may negatively affect ecosystem services. Here, we investigate the effects of cattle-grazing intensification on dung removal by dung beetles in field experiments replicated in 38 pastures around the world. Within each study site, we measured dung removal in pastures managed with low- and high-intensity regimes to assess between-regime differences in dung beetle diversity and dung removal, whilst also considering climate and regional variations. The impacts of intensification were heterogeneous, either diminishing or increasing dung beetle species richness, functional diversity, and dung removal rates. The effects of beetle diversity on dung removal were more variable across sites than within sites. Dung removal increased with species richness across sites, while functional diversity consistently enhanced dung removal within sites, independently of cattle grazing intensity or climate. Our findings indicate that, despite intensified cattle stocking rates, ecosystem services related to decomposition and nutrient cycling can be maintained when a functionally diverse dung beetle community inhabits the human-modified landscape.}, year = {2023}, eissn = {2041-1723}, orcid-numbers = {Noriega, Jorge Ari/0000-0003-1760-7020; Hortal, Joaquín/0000-0002-8370-8877; deCastro-Arrazola, Indradatta/0000-0001-6558-5730; Alves-Martins, Fernanda/0000-0003-4269-586X; Ortega, Jean C. The enhancement of invertebrate assemblages by establishing new, seminatural habitats, such as set-aside fields can improve biological pest control in adjacent crops, and mitigate the adverse effect of biotic homogenization. In this study we aimed to examine the effects of ecological intensification in winter wheat fields in Hungary. We tested how pests and their natural enemies were affected at different spatial scales by landscape composition (proportion of semi-natural habitats in the surrounding matrix), configuration (presence of adjacent set-aside fields), and local field management practices, such as fertilizer (NPK) applications without applying insecticides. We demonstrated that at the local scale, decreased fertilizer usage had no direct effect either on pests or their natural enemies. Higher landscape complexity and adjacent semi-natural habitats seem to be the major drivers of decreasing aphid abundance, suggesting that these enhanced the predatory insect assemblages. Additionally, the high yield in plots with no adjacent set-aside fields suggests that intensive management can compensate for the lower yields on the extensive plots. Our results demonstrated that although complexity at the landscape scale was crucial for maintaining invertebrate assemblages, divergence in their response to pests and pathogens could also be explained by different dispersal abilities. Although the landscape attributes acted as dispersal filters in the organization of pest and pathogen assemblages in croplands, the presence of set-aside fields negatively influenced aphid abundance due to their between-field isolation effect.}, year = {2020}, eissn = {2167-8359}, orcid-numbers = {Růžičková, Jana/0000-0001-9703-4538; Báldi, András/0000-0001-6063-3721} } @article{MTMT:30370284, title = {Functionally richer communities improve ecosystem functioning: Dung removal and secondary seed dispersal by dung beetles in the Western Palaearctic}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/30370284}, author = {Milotić, T. and Baltzinger, C. and Eichberg, C. and Eycott, A.E. and Heurich, M. and Müller, J. and Noriega, J.A. and Menendez, R. and Stadler, J. and Ádám, Réka and Bargmann, T. and Bilger, I. and Buse, J. and Calatayud, J. and Ciubuc, C. and Boros, Gergely and Jay-Robert, P. and Kruus, M. and Merivee, E. and Miessen, G. and Must, A. and Ardali, E. and Preda, E. and Rahimi, I. and Rohwedder, D. and Rose, R. and Slade, E.M. and Somay, László and Tahmasebi, P. and Ziani, S. and Hoffmann, M.}, doi = {10.1111/jbi.13452}, journal-iso = {J BIOGEOGR}, journal = {JOURNAL OF BIOGEOGRAPHY}, volume = {46}, unique-id = {30370284}, issn = {0305-0270}, year = {2019}, eissn = {1365-2699}, pages = {70-82} } @article{MTMT:30348062, title = {The effect of light, soil pH and stand heterogeneity on understory species composition of dry oak forests in the North Hungarian Mountains}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/30348062}, author = {Ádám, Réka and Ódor, Péter and Bidló, András and Somay, László and Bölöni, János}, doi = {10.1556/168.2018.19.3.7}, journal-iso = {COMMUNITY ECOL}, journal = {COMMUNITY ECOLOGY}, volume = {19}, unique-id = {30348062}, issn = {1585-8553}, year = {2018}, eissn = {1588-2756}, pages = {259-271}, orcid-numbers = {Ódor, Péter/0000-0003-1729-8897} } @article{MTMT:3415179, title = {Dung beetle assemblages, dung removal and secondary seed dispersal: data from a large-scale, multi-site experiment in the Western Palaearctic}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/3415179}, author = {Milotic, T and Baltzinger, C and Eichberg, C and Eycott, AE and Heurich, M and Müller, J and Noriega, JA and Menendez, R and Stadler, J and Ádám, Réka and Bargmann, T and Bilger, I and Buse, J and Calatayud, J and Ciubuc, C and Boros, Gergely and Hauso, M and Jay-Robert, P and Kruus, M and Merivee, E and Miessen, G and Must, A and Omidzadeh, Ardali E and Preda, E and Rahimi, I and Rohwedder, D and Rose, R and Slade, EM and Somay, László and Tahmasebi, P and Ziani, S and Hoffmann, M}, doi = {10.21425/F5101-237289}, journal-iso = {FRONT BIOGEOGRAPHY}, journal = {FRONTIERS OF BIOGEOGRAPHY}, volume = {10}, unique-id = {3415179}, issn = {1948-6596}, year = {2018} } @CONFERENCE{MTMT:3411337, title = {Ganéjtúró bogár közösségek évszakos változásai magyarországi legelőkön, fáslegelőkön és erdőkben}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/3411337}, author = {Somay, László and Ádám, Réka and Boros, Gergely and Báldi, A}, booktitle = {11.
