It claims that existing explanations have so far failed to appreciate the project's symbolic importance for enacting and reproducing the Orbán government's self-conception in foreign affairs. This self-conception is notable for locating Hungary at the crossroads, geographically as well as normatively, between East and West and for appraising the country as a great conduit between and across these spaces. By viewing the railway upgrade as an element of identity politics, the article moves beyond the literature's crude notion that this is a political project simply because it seems not to make sense economically. We conduct a discourse analysis to trace the meaning of the project in a set of chosen texts from key actors in Hungarian politics. Besides appreciating the infrastructure project as a marker of identity, the article also shows that the Orbán government's emphasis on connecting distant worlds reveals a normatively Chinese approach to international politics in Central and Eastern Europe.}, year = {2024}, eissn = {2288-2871}, pages = {253-275}, orcid-numbers = {Peragovics, Tamás/0000-0002-5954-8164} } @book{MTMT:34863714, title = {Trendek és töréspontok V.. kockázatok és mellékhatások}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/34863714}, isbn = {9789636640330}, doi = {10.1556/9789636640323}, editor = {Szanyi, Miklós and Szunomár, Ágnes and Török, Ádám}, publisher = {Akadémiai Kiadó Zrt.}, unique-id = {34863714}, year = {2024}, orcid-numbers = {Török, Ádám/0000-0001-9062-2011} } @article{MTMT:34798542, title = {The role of institutional and political factors in attracting Chinese and Russian multinationals to the Visegrad countries}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/34798542}, author = {Szunomár, Ágnes and Peragovics, Tamás and Weiner, Csaba}, doi = {10.2478/pce-2024-0012}, journal-iso = {POL CENTR EUR}, journal = {POLITICS IN CENTRAL EUROPE}, volume = {20}, unique-id = {34798542}, issn = {1801-3422}, year = {2024}, pages = {271-301}, orcid-numbers = {Peragovics, Tamás/0000-0002-5954-8164} } @inbook{MTMT:34763708, title = {Economic versus political engagement with China and Taiwan in Central and Eastern Europe}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/34763708}, author = {Szunomár, Ágnes}, booktitle = {Switching diplomatic recognition between Taiwan and China}, doi = {10.4324/9781003371427-8}, unique-id = {34763708}, year = {2024}, pages = {179-195} } @article{MTMT:34742499, title = {PISA score as an inappropriate measure for growth?
