However, empirical evidence is lacking about which traits, or trade-offs, underlie species stability, especially across different biomes. We compiled a worldwide collection of long-term permanent vegetation records (greater than 7000 plots from 78 datasets) from a large range of habitats which we combined with existing trait databases. We tested whether the observed inter-annual variability in species abundance (coefficient of variation) was related to multiple individual traits. We found that populations with greater leaf dry matter content and seed mass were more stable over time. Despite the variability explained by these traits being low, their effect was consistent across different datasets. Other traits played a significant, albeit weaker, role in species stability, and the inclusion of multi-variate axes or phylogeny did not substantially modify nor improve predictions. These results provide empirical evidence and highlight the relevance of specific ecological trade-offs, i.e. in different resource-use and dispersal strategies, for plant populations stability across multiple biomes. Further research is, however, necessary to integrate and evaluate the role of other specific traits, often not available in databases, and intraspecific trait variability in modulating species stability.}, keywords = {DISPERSAL; VARIABILITY; Temporal patterns; Conservative; long-term studies; acquisitive}, year = {2023}, eissn = {1471-2954}, orcid-numbers = {Galland, Thomas/0000-0003-0883-8871; Gotzenberger, Lars/0000-0003-3040-2900; Leps, Jan/0000-0002-4822-7429; E-Vojtkó, Anna/0000-0001-6370-680X; Carmona, Carlos P./0000-0001-6935-4913; Garnier, Eric/0000-0002-9392-5154; Ibanez, Ricardo/0000-0002-1772-4473; Ónodi, Gábor/0000-0003-4308-7997; Skalova, Hana/0000-0002-1252-2952; Vandvik, Vigdis/0000-0003-4651-4798} } @article{MTMT:34088831, title = {The role of drought, disturbance, and seed dispersal in dominance shifts in a temperate grassland}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/34088831}, author = {Orbán, Ildikó and Ónodi, Gábor and Kröel-Dulay, György}, doi = {10.1111/jvs.13199}, journal-iso = {J VEG SCI}, journal = {JOURNAL OF VEGETATION SCIENCE}, volume = {34}, unique-id = {34088831}, issn = {1100-9233}, year = {2023}, eissn = {1654-1103}, orcid-numbers = {Orbán, Ildikó/0000-0003-1547-675X; Ónodi, Gábor/0000-0003-4308-7997} } @article{MTMT:33187931, title = {Taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity peaks do not coincide along a compositional gradient in forest-grassland mosaics}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/33187931}, author = {Erdős, László and Ho, Vu Khanh and Bátori, Zoltán and Kröel-Dulay, György and Ónodi, Gábor and Tölgyesi, Csaba and Török, Péter and Lengyel, Attila}, doi = {10.1111/1365-2745.14025}, journal-iso = {J ECOL}, journal = {JOURNAL OF ECOLOGY}, volume = {111}, unique-id = {33187931}, issn = {0022-0477}, year = {2023}, eissn = {1365-2745}, pages = {182-197}, orcid-numbers = {Erdős, László/0000-0002-6750-0961; Bátori, Zoltán/0000-0001-9915-5309; Ónodi, Gábor/0000-0003-4308-7997; Tölgyesi, Csaba/0000-0002-0770-2107; Lengyel, Attila/0000-0002-1712-6748} } @article{MTMT:33538217, title = {Robust methods are needed to resolve contradictions in species richness curves along ecological gradients}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/33538217}, author = {Ónodi, Gábor and Kröel-Dulay, György and Kertész, Miklós and Botta-Dukát, Zoltán}, doi = {10.1016/j.ppees.2022.125703}, journal-iso = {PERSPECT PLANT ECOL}, journal = {PERSPECTIVES IN PLANT ECOLOGY EVOLUTION AND SYSTEMATICS}, volume = {57}, unique-id = {33538217}, issn = {1433-8319}, year = {2022}, eissn = {1433-8319}, orcid-numbers = {Ónodi, Gábor/0000-0003-4308-7997; Botta-Dukát, Zoltán/0000-0002-9544-3474} } @article{MTMT:33419988, title = {The response of litter decomposition to extreme drought modified by plant species, plant part, and soil depth in a temperate grassland}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/33419988}, author = {Seres, Anikó and Kröel-Dulay, György and Szakálas, Judit and Nagy, Péter István and Boros, Gergely and Ónodi, Gábor and Kertész, Miklós and Szitár, Katalin and Mojzes, Andrea}, doi = {10.1002/ece3.9652}, journal-iso = {ECOL EVOL}, journal = {ECOLOGY AND EVOLUTION}, volume = {12}, unique-id = {33419988}, issn = {2045-7758}, year = {2022}, eissn = {2045-7758}, orcid-numbers = {Seres, Anikó/0000-0002-5443-1805; Ónodi, Gábor/0000-0003-4308-7997; Szitár, Katalin/0000-0002-8810-540X; Mojzes, Andrea/0000-0003-2171-403X} } @article{MTMT:32726196, title = {LOTVS: a global collection of permanent vegetation plots}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/32726196}, author = {Marta, Gaia Sperandii and Francesco, de Bello and Enrique, Valencia and Lars, Götzenberger and Manuele, Bazzichetto and Thomas, Galland and E-Vojtkó, Anna and Luisa, Conti and Peter, B. Long-term data collected through the regular sampling of permanent plots represent the most accurate resource to study ecological succession, analyse the stability of a community over time and understand the mechanisms driving vegetation change. We hereby present the LOng-Term Vegetation Sampling (LOTVS) initiative, a global collection of vegetation time-series derived from the regular monitoring of plant species in permanent plots. With 79 data sets from five continents and 7,789 vegetation time-series monitored for at least 6 years and mostly on an annual basis, LOTVS possibly represents the largest collection of temporally fine-grained vegetation time-series derived from permanent plots and made accessible to the research community. As such, it has an outstanding potential to support innovative research in the fields of vegetation science, plant ecology and temporal ecology.}, year = {2022}, eissn = {1654-1103}, orcid-numbers = {E-Vojtkó, Anna/0000-0001-6370-680X; Ónodi, Gábor/0000-0003-4308-7997} } @article{MTMT:32725693, title = {High-Resolution Transect Sampling and Multiple Scale Diversity Analyses for Evaluating Grassland Resilience to Climatic Extremes}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/32725693}, author = {Bartha, Sándor and Szabó, Gábor and Csete, Sándor and Purger, Dragica and Házi, Judit and Csathó, András István and Campetella, Giandiego and Canullo, Roberto and Chelli, Stefano and Tsakalos, James Lee and Ónodi, Gábor and Kröel-Dulay, György and Zimmermann, Zita}, doi = {10.3390/land11030378}, journal-iso = {LAND-BASEL}, journal = {LAND (BASEL)}, volume = {11}, unique-id = {32725693}, year = {2022}, eissn = {2073-445X}, orcid-numbers = {Bartha, Sándor/0000-0001-6331-7521; Purger, Dragica/0000-0003-2480-0777; Campetella, Giandiego/0000-0001-6126-522X; Canullo, Roberto/0000-0002-9913-6981; Chelli, Stefano/0000-0001-7184-8242; Tsakalos, James Lee/0000-0001-5067-196X; Ónodi, Gábor/0000-0003-4308-7997; Zimmermann, Zita/0000-0002-7841-0777} } @article{MTMT:32052252, title = {Disturbance reshapes the productivity–diversity relationship}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/32052252}, author = {Ónodi, Gábor and Kröel-Dulay, György and Botta-Dukát, Zoltán and Kertész, Miklós}, doi = {10.1111/jvs.13030}, journal-iso = {J VEG SCI}, journal = {JOURNAL OF VEGETATION SCIENCE}, volume = {32}, unique-id = {32052252}, issn = {1100-9233}, year = {2021}, eissn = {1654-1103}, orcid-numbers = {Ónodi, Gábor/0000-0003-4308-7997; Botta-Dukát, Zoltán/0000-0002-9544-3474} } @article{MTMT:31829605, title = {Oak regeneration at the arid boundary of the temperate deciduous forest biome: insights from a seeding and watering experiment}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/31829605}, author = {Erdős, László and Szitár, Katalin and Öllerer, Kinga and Ónodi, Gábor and Kertész, Miklós and Török, Péter and Baráth, Kornél and Tölgyesi, Csaba and Bátori, Zoltán and Somay, László and Orbán, Ildikó and Kröel-Dulay, György}, doi = {10.1007/s10342-020-01344-x}, journal-iso = {EUR J FOREST RES}, journal = {EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF FOREST RESEARCH}, volume = {140}, unique-id = {31829605}, issn = {1612-4669}, year = {2021}, eissn = {1612-4677}, pages = {589-601}, orcid-numbers = {Erdős, László/0000-0002-6750-0961; Szitár, Katalin/0000-0002-8810-540X; Öllerer, Kinga/0000-0003-3142-0000; Ónodi, Gábor/0000-0003-4308-7997; Kertész, Miklós/0000-0002-3565-4624; Török, Péter/0000-0002-4428-3327; Baráth, Kornél/0000-0002-4564-776X; Tölgyesi, Csaba/0000-0002-0770-2107; Bátori, Zoltán/0000-0001-9915-5309; Orbán, Ildikó/0000-0003-1547-675X; Kröel-Dulay, György/0000-0002-0695-1232} } @article{MTMT:31709248, title = {The effects of woody plant encroachment and wildfire on plant species richness and composition: Temporal changes in a forest–steppe mosaic}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/31709248}, author = {Ónodi, Gábor and Kertész, Miklós and Lengyel, Attila and Pándi, Ildikó and Somay, László and Szitár, Katalin and Kröel-Dulay, György}, doi = {10.1111/avsc.12546}, journal-iso = {APP VEGE SCI}, journal = {APPLIED VEGETATION SCIENCE}, volume = {24}, unique-id = {31709248}, issn = {1402-2001}, year = {2021}, eissn = {1654-109X}, orcid-numbers = {Ónodi, Gábor/0000-0003-4308-7997; Lengyel, Attila/0000-0002-1712-6748; Szitár, Katalin/0000-0002-8810-540X; Kröel-Dulay, György/0000-0002-0695-1232} }
