	abstract = {The concept of European sovereignty has been in the focus of attention since Emmanuel Macron's speech at Sorbonne in 2017. Our multidisciplinary research provides a chronological overview of the efforts to establish EU strategic autonomy and sovereignty. Concept analysis examines the link between sovereignty and autonomy and their content in political discourse. Finally, the two concepts are placed in a schema of practical reasoning to explore the future vision outlined. The discourse analysis of strategic documents related to the autonomy and sovereignty of the EU from 1998 to 2023, following the Strategic Compass and the Russian invasion in Ukraine, has revealed the difference between strategic autonomy and sovereignty and the evolution of the idea of European defense as the core of sovereignty. Attempts to make these concepts and related EU actions acceptable are highlighted.},

	abstract = {The aim of this chapter is to provide an overview on the international role of the European Union (EU) and
		on the debate referring to the concept of strategic autonomy. The discussion on creating/strengthening/
		restoring European strategic autonomy has gained visibility and significance after the European Union
		issued its first Global Strategy in 2016, calling for “an appropriate level of ambition and strategic autonomy”
		to strengthen “Europe’s ability to promote peace and security within and beyond its borders”. This has
		been triggered by external pressures, namely the deterioration of the EU’s security environment and
		the fragmentation of the international order against which the EU should have more action potential for
		promoting its own and hedging others’ interests. External pressures included subsequent crises since
		2008, the U.K. leaving the Union (Brexit) and the transformation of Transatlantic relations. This concept
		paper highlights the conceptual elements and key practical aspects of European strategic autonomy not
		only in the traditional defence-oriented sense but in the wider, global perspective, which we need to study
		to gain a thorough understanding of the ways and means of creating/strengthening/restoring European
		strategic autonomy in these fields.},

Its result is a Simulation Supported HEI-level Massive Open Online Course entitled „Interdisciplinary Training on EU Security, Resilience and Sustainability” (EUSecure SimMOOC). The course and the handbook use an innovative transdisciplinary approach to EU security studies by complementing in-class learning with interactive blended learning activities and a blended simulation exercise. The chapters of this handbook offer a broad academic perspective on current security challenges, using the most up-to-date sources to highlight the nature of these threats and to resilience. We recommend it to university students and everyone who is interested in the topic, along with the freely accessible online course.},
