The original manuscript is published here with the annotations of the authors, finding that one of the newly proposed genus-group names and 14 of the new speciesgroup names are identical with taxa established after the year 2000, hence these names are not available for any action in zoological nomenclature, and they have only historical interest. The remaining 74 species-group and three genus-group names became available in this work under the authorship of Márton Hreblay, Gergely Katona and Balázs Tóth with the publication date of the present paper. Seven of the lectotype designations are invalid or can be questioned; these cases are also annotated. With 190 figures. All the species are documented by museum vouchers. Most of the species recorded, have restricted distribution or they are endemic to the Pamir–NW Himalaya region. Sixteen species are protected in the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972; three species highly protected under schedule I: Baltia butleri, Pieris krueperi, Lasiommata menava; and others under schedule II: Papilio machaon, Parnassius charltonius, Parnassius epaphus, Colias ladakensis, Colias eogene, Colias stoliczkana, Pieris deota, Pontia chloridice, Alpherakya devanica, Pamiria metallica, Paralasa mani, Paralasa kalinda and Polygonia c-album. We report lower occurrences for the endemic Pieris deota, where the migrant Pontia chloridice is reported to fly at more than 600 m higher than earlier records indicated. Lastly, the male and female genitalia of some endemic and rare species are illustrated, including Euchloe daphalis. The range of E. neophron is subdivided to several, geographically distinct populations, currently recognised as subspecies by taxonomists on the basis of violet, blue, and green-coloured morphs. We investigated the optical mechanism of all these morphs by various materials science techniques. We found that the structural colour is generated by the lower lamina of the cover scales and the different colours are tuned according to their thickness, which was also proved by modelling. The colour tuning of the different subspecies does not reflect any clinal pattern, be it geographical or altitudinal.
