Selecting suitable plants that promote the performance of the progeny is referred to as the Preference−Performance hypothesis (or ‘mother‐knows‐best’). While root infestation generally reduces the performance of leaf herbivores, little is known about its impact on female oviposition. We investigated whether maize root infestation by the Western corn rootworm (WCR) affects the oviposition preference and larval performance of the European corn borer (ECB). ECB females used leaf volatiles to select healthy plants over WCR‐infested plants. Undecane, a compound absent from the volatile bouquet of healthy plants, was the sole compound to be upregulated upon root infestation and acted as a repellent for first oviposition. ECB larvae yet performed better on plants infested below‐ground than on healthy plants, suggesting an example of ‘bad motherhood’. The increased ECB performance on WCR‐infested plants was mirrored by an increased leaf consumption, and no changes in the plant primary or secondary metabolism were detected. Understanding plant‐mediated interactions between above‐ and below‐ground herbivores may help to predict oviposition decisions, and ultimately, to manage pest outbreaks in the field.}, year = {2024}, eissn = {1365-3040}, pages = {1-12}, orcid-numbers = {Hajdu, Csengele/0000-0002-1847-7726; Waterman, Jamie M./0000-0003-1782-827X; Machado, Ricardo Alberto Ruiz/0000-0002-7624-1105; Khan, Sheharyar Ahmed/0000-0003-1627-2193; Erb, Matthias/0000-0002-4446-9834; Robert, Christelle Aurélie Maud/0000-0003-3415-2371} } @article{MTMT:34162685, title = {Változó hím befektetés a nőstény további párosodását akadályozó képletekbe kis apollólepkénél (Parnassius mnemosyne (LINNAEUS, 1758))}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/34162685}, author = {Gór, Ádám and Fónagy, Adrien and PÁSZTOR, KATA and Szigeti, Viktor and Lang, Zsolt and Kis, János}, doi = {10.20331/AllKoz.2023.108.1-2.3}, journal-iso = {ÁLLATTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK}, journal = {ÁLLATTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK}, volume = {108}, unique-id = {34162685}, issn = {0002-5658}, year = {2023}, eissn = {2786-3565}, pages = {33-36}, orcid-numbers = {Kis, János/0000-0001-9354-1292} } @article{MTMT:33847362, title = {Facultative male investment in prolonged mate-guarding in a butterfly}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/33847362}, author = {Gór, Ádám and Fónagy, Adrien and Pásztor, Katalin and Szigeti, Viktor and Lang, Zsolt and Kis, János}, doi = {10.1163/1568539X-bja10219}, journal-iso = {BEHAVIOUR}, journal = {BEHAVIOUR}, volume = {160}, unique-id = {33847362}, issn = {0005-7959}, abstract = {Sexual conflict over mating may induce male mate-guarding prolonged in time in the absence of males, via devices such as mating plugs, widespread in insects. In most Lepidoptera, internal plugs are common, while in some butterfly families large external devices, called sphragides, evolved independently. Lack of, or incomplete sphragis in a few individuals were reported in sphragis-bearing species. Previous studies focused on typifying species-specific devices in a few specimens of many species. In contrast, we investigated alternative mate-guarding devices in detail of a sphragis-bearing butterfly. We conducted a six-year observational field study in a Clouded Apollo Parnassius mnemosyne population. Inspecting 492 females, we identified 3 different devices, filament, stopple and shield (i.e., sphragis) increasing in size and structure complexity, implying differential male investment and effectiveness in securing paternity. Shield dimensions, colour and all devices’ shapes varied considerably. Shields were far more frequent than other devices. Some devices were lost, and a few were video-recorded when removed by males, showing the role of different parts of male external genitalia. We discuss potential causes of device variation and the role of removal attempts, and assess potential costs and benefits for both sexes.}, year = {2023}, eissn = {1568-539X}, pages = {515-557}, orcid-numbers = {Kis, János/0000-0001-9354-1292} } @article{MTMT:33758431, title = {Co-application of entomopathogenic fungi with chemical insecticides against Culex pipiens}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/33758431}, author = {Salem, Hend H.A. and Mohammed, Shaimaa H. and Eltaly, Randa I. and Moustafa, Moataz A.M. and Fónagy, Adrien and Farag, Shaimaa M.}, doi = {10.1016/j.jip.2023.107916}, journal-iso = {J INVERTEBR PATHOL}, journal = {JOURNAL OF INVERTEBRATE PATHOLOGY}, volume = {198}, unique-id = {33758431}, issn = {0022-2011}, year = {2023}, eissn = {1096-0805} } @article{MTMT:33729107, title = {The Comparative Toxicity, Biochemical and Physiological Impacts of Chlorantraniliprole and Indoxacarb on Mamestra brassicae (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/33729107}, author = {Moustafa, Moataz A. Here, the sublethal and lethal effects of chlorantraniliprole and indoxacarb were investigated on the developmental stages, detoxification enzymes, reproductive activity, calling behavior, peripheral physiology, and pheromone titer of M. brasssicae. Methods: To assess pesticide effects, the second instar larvae were maintained for 24 h on a semi-artificial diet containing insecticides at their LC10, LC30, and LC50 concentrations. Results: M. brassicae was more susceptible to chlorantraniliprole (LC50 = 0.35 mg/L) than indoxacarb (LC50 = 1.71 mg/L). A significantly increased developmental time was observed with both insecticides at all tested concentrations but decreases in pupation rate, pupal weight, and emergence were limited to the LC50 concentration. Reductions in both the total number of eggs laid per female and the egg viability were observed with both insecticides at their LC30 and LC50 concentrations. Both female calling activity and the sex pheromone (Z11-hexadecenyl acetate and hexadecenyl acetate) titer were significantly reduced by chlorantraniliprole in LC50 concentration. Antennal responses of female antennae to benzaldehyde and 3-octanone were significantly weaker than controls after exposure to the indoxocarb LC50 concentration. Significant reductions in the enzymatic activity of glutathione S-transferases, mixed-function oxidases, and carboxylesterases were observed in response to both insecticides.}, year = {2023}, eissn = {2305-6304}, pages = {212-226}, orcid-numbers = {Moustafa, Moataz A. Ismereteink bővítése e szerek hatásmechanizmusa területén nélkülözhetetlen. A Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) esetében etetéses módszerrel (inszekticidek vizes oldatával kezelt ricinuslevelekkel 24 órán át) meghatároztuk az LC10, LC50 és LC90 letális koncentráció értékeket valamennyi lárvastádiumban. Ezt követően szubletális hatásokat vizsgálandó, 24 órán át etettünk második stádiumú lárvákat (LC10) és megfigyeltük a lárvális fejlődést, a bábállapot hosszúságát, bábtömeget, kelési arányt, valamint a fekunditást és fertilitást. Összehasonlításképpen, ugyanezeket a paramétereket megvizsgáltuk (LC50) koncentrációban is. A nőstények csalogató viselkedésének mértékét egytől öt napos korukig figyeltük meg, továbbá gázkromatográffal kapcsolt tömegspektrométerrel megmértük a szexferomon komponenseinek mennyiségét. A kezelések LC50 és LC10 koncentrációban szignifikánsan növelték a S. littoralis lárvák és bábok fejlődési idejét, és negatívan befolyásolták a reprodukciós aktivitást. A nőstények csalogató viselkedése 50-60 százalékkal csökkent a kezeletlen kontrollhoz képest. A kezelés csak kis mértékben csökkentette a feromon összmennyiségét, de az ötféle komponensre valamelyest eltérő mértékben hatott.
