In this short overview article, we summarize the natural environmental conditions of the region and the impact of river control works on the water-retention capacity of the landscape. In this respect, we also review the impact of intensive agricultural cultivation on soil structure and on soil moisture in light of the meteorological elements of the 2022 drought. The most important change is that the soil stores much less moisture than in the natural state; therefore, under the meteorological conditions of summer 2022, the evapotranspiration capacity was reduced. As a result, the low humidity in the air layers above the ground is not sufficient to trigger summer showers and thunderstorms associated with weather fronts and local heat convection anymore. Our proposed solution is to restore about one-fifth of the area to the original land types and usage before large-field agriculture. Low-lying areas should be transformed into a mosaic-like landscape with good water supply and evapotranspiration capacity to humidify the lower air layers. Furthermore, the unfavorable soil structure that has resulted from intensive agriculture should also be converted into more permeable soil to enhance infiltration.}, year = {2024}, eissn = {2073-445X}, orcid-numbers = {Timár, Gábor/0000-0001-9675-6192; Jakab, Gusztáv/0000-0002-2569-5967; Székely, Balázs/0000-0002-6552-4329} } @article{MTMT:34395670, title = {A pettyegetett gyásztárnics}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/34395670}, author = {Jakab, Gusztáv}, journal-iso = {A FÖLDGÖMB}, journal = {A FÖLDGÖMB}, volume = {XLI}, unique-id = {34395670}, issn = {1215-8690}, year = {2023}, pages = {9}, orcid-numbers = {Jakab, Gusztáv/0000-0002-2569-5967} } @{MTMT:34395625, title = {Az ember nyomot hagy a Kárpát-medence tájképén. These problems motivated the compilation of a regional dataset for the flora of the Pannonian region (Eastern Central Europe). PADAPT, the Pannonian Dataset of Plant Traits relies on regional data sources and collates data on 54 traits and attributes of the plant species of the Pannonian region. The current version covers approximately 90% of the species of the region and consists of 126,337 records on 2745 taxa. By including species of the eastern part of Europe not covered by other databases, PADAPT can facilitate studying the flora and vegetation of the eastern part of the continent. We present here our preliminary results based on recent fieldwork and herbarium studies.MethodsWe recorded bryophyte occurrences in grid cells (quadrants) of approximately 5.5 x 6 km. Frequency was determined based on the number of quadrants, and geographical distribution evaluated in terms of the 19 administrative units (counties) of the country. To investigate correlations between species richness and relevant environmental drivers, statistical analyses were carried out.Key resultsA total of 698 bryophyte taxa (2 hornworts, 151 liverworts and 545 mosses) have been found in the territory of Hungary. For each of the 637 taxa that have been observed since 1973, one of five frequency classes (very common, common, sporadic to frequent, rare, and very rare) has been assigned based on the relevant number of field records or herbarium specimens. Additionally, tabular distributional information (occurrence in each of the 19 counties) is presented for each taxon. In the statistical evaluation of the geographical distribution data, the elevational range and the size of the surveyed area were positively correlated with bryophyte richness, whereas arable land cover was negatively correlated.ConclusionsAlthough the survey was not uniform or complete across the different counties, the results support some robust bryogeographical theories. We hope to have the opportunity in the near future to compile a new Hungarian bryophyte Red List, partly based on these national frequency data.}, keywords = {Mosses; Hornworts; liverworts; rarity; Counties}, year = {2023}, eissn = {1743-2820}, pages = {121-148}, orcid-numbers = {Csiky, János/0000-0002-7920-5070; Baráth, Kornél/0000-0002-4564-776X; Beránek, Ábel/0000-0002-4675-6992; Deme, Judit/0000-0001-7906-3749; Jakab, Gusztáv/0000-0002-2569-5967; Mesterházy, Attila/0000-0001-7952-5990; Nagy, Zoltán/0000-0003-2034-9333; Németh, Csaba/0000-0002-3482-0512; Pócs, Tamás/0000-0002-1359-1298; Schmidt, Dávid/0000-0002-5387-9982; Szűcs, Péter/0000-0002-3988-7062; Papp, Beáta/0000-0002-9061-9987} } @article{MTMT:33781521, title = {Checklist of Alien Vascular Plants of Hungary and Their Invasion Biological Characteristics}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/33781521}, author = {Csiky, János and Balogh, Lajos and Dancza, István and Gyulai, Ferenc and Jakab, Gusztáv and Király, Botond Gergely and Lehoczky, Éva and Mesterházy, Attila and Pósa, Patrícia and Wirth, Tamás}, doi = {10.1556/034.65.2023.1-2.3}, journal-iso = {ACTA BOT HUNG}, journal = {ACTA BOTANICA HUNGARICA}, volume = {65}, unique-id = {33781521}, issn = {0236-6495}, abstract = {As part of the PADAPT project, the authors compiled the invasion biological database of the alien vascular flora of Hungary, which contains the nativeness, residence time, introduc- tion mode and invasion status of 878 alien or cryptogenic taxa. In the absence of adequate evidence, the classification of some species was only possible into uncertain, transitional cat- egories. The definitions of most categories are compatible with several international termi- nologies, but are primarily based on Central European traditions. Of the 560 taxa that have already been naturalised in Hungary, 85 are invasive, and 22 of them are transformer alien vascular plants.
