The first phase was characterised by the institutionalisation of pedagogy as a university discipline in the last third of the 19th century. During this period, Herbartianism, which was the academic foundation of education, reached its peak. The second phase continued into the 20th century. During this period, an educational science movement emerged, which focused on the empirical paradigm of social science research; however, the various approaches of this movement (experimental pedagogy, children's research, etc.) were not yet accepted as established academic fields of educational science. The third phase is characterized by the permanent institutionalisation of the educational sciences, with a focus on German Geisteswissenschaften.
