The phenomenon investigated is the absence of a frequent consonant cluster ([nt] in Latin, [ŋk] in Hungarian) from a position at the end of verb stems. An important property of the missing consonant cluster in both languages is that it also functions as a person marker in the verbal inflection. It is argued that in Latin this gap is functionally motivated: it represents a case of syntagmatic pressure to avoid repeating the same sequence at too close an interval. In Hungarian, by contrast, the absence of [ŋk] from verb stem-final position is arguably unrelated to the identical phonological form of the 1Plural affix and is simply the result of accidents of diachronic development.}, year = {2023}, eissn = {2399-6714}, pages = {1-15} } @article{MTMT:34030080, title = {Sound patterns, frequency and predictability in inflection}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/34030080}, author = {Cser, András}, doi = {10.1556/2062.2023.00620}, journal-iso = {ACTA LING ACAD}, journal = {ACTA LINGUISTICA ACADEMICA}, volume = {70}, unique-id = {34030080}, issn = {2559-8201}, abstract = {The paper investigates the relations between phonological form and information content within Latin verbal inflection from two interrelated points of view. It looks at conditional entropy relations within the present paradigm to see how these relate to the textual frequency of the individual forms; and it seeks to answer the question to what extent the phonological form of stems and endings has the potential to lead to ambiguity in morphological marking. The latter issue is approached from the angle of the information content that word forms taken in themselves have about their morphological status. The broader question of potential ambiguity is broken down into two separate questions: one concerns stems where intra-paradigmatic ambiguity would be possible; the other concerns stems that include phonological material that could itself be interpreted as a morphological marker. The absence of potential ambiguity in the first sense, and its severe restriction in the second sense is interpreted here as an emergent mechanism to enhance the information content of verb forms.}, year = {2023}, eissn = {2560-1016}, pages = {397-409} } @inbook{MTMT:33203165, title = {Zárt szótagi magánhangzónyúlás: fonológiai kölcsönzés?}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/33203165}, author = {Cser, András and Huszthy, Bálint}, booktitle = {Nyelvelmélet és kontaktológia 5.}, unique-id = {33203165}, year = {2022}, pages = {49-63} } @book{MTMT:33078095, title = {Az egyházi latin nyelv alapjai}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/33078095}, isbn = {9789632779829}, author = {Collins, John F.}, editor = {Szilágyi, Csaba}, publisher = {Szent István Társulat az Apostoli Szentszék Könyvkiadója}, unique-id = {33078095}, year = {2022} } @inbook{MTMT:32703550, title = {Latin igealakok egymás között}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/32703550}, author = {Cser, András}, booktitle = {A bravúr kötelező : A budapesti Piarista Gimnázium 1950 és 1991 közötti diákjainak emlékkönyve}, unique-id = {32703550}, year = {2021}, pages = {29-38} }
