However, in the peripheral regions east of the German-speaking lands, including Hungary, periodicals began to appear in greater numbers only from the early eighteenth century. By that time, Latin journalism was losing its popularity in the central regions of Europe due to the widespread establishment of the vernacular press and the standardization of native languages. Yet, the editors of the newly established periodicals in Hungary could not follow this pattern due to several reasons. One solution to their problems was to develop the Latin-language press. This paper attempts to reconceptualize the role of late Latin journalism from the perspective of specific peripheral cultural circumstances, with a special focus on the periodical genre of ‘ephemerides’. The focus of the analysis is on Ephemerides Statistico-Politicae / Posonienses (1804–38), a popular and significant nineteenth-century Latin journal, and its supplementary annexes. These poems, whether written by Csokonai himself or under his direction, are representative of the poetic approach that characterised the atmosphere of the Debrecen College in the years when Csokonai studied and taught there; how the students were introduced to ancient Roman lyrical and epic poetry, as well as mythological topos and how they came to reconsider these works. They also epxlore the aesthetic approach students developed regarding the purpose and possibilities of poetry and art. The study also reveals the differences along which, by the end of the 18th century, Debrecen’s poetics education had become partially separated from the foundations of Jesuit poetics education, which had been the model for the earlier period. LA - Hungarian DB - MTMT ER - TY - JOUR AU - Vitekné Balogh, Piroska TI - The Interpretation and Research of Neo-Latin Literature in the Hungarian historia litteraria Tradition between 1711 and 2010 JF - TERMINUS J2 - TERMINUS VL - 26 PY - 2024 IS - 3-4 SP - 271 EP - 293 PG - 23 SN - 2082-0984 DO - 10.4467/20843844TE.24.016.20393 UR - https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/35661199 ID - 35661199 AB - The culture of Hungary held Neo-Latin literature in a unique place, which was closely tied to the special status of the Latin language in the country. Latin was not only encouraged for cultural, scientific, or diplomatic purposes, but it also served as the language of public life until 1844. As a result, a significant part of Hungarian literaturę was written in Latin, even in the nineteenth century. The language of the first comprehensive works on the history of Hungarian literature—the manuals of the so-called historia litteraria tradition—was also Latin. In this paper, an exploration is made of how the Neo-Latin tradition appears in the handbooks on the history of Hungarian literature published since the beginning of the eighteenth century. It is investigated whether authors reflect on the Latinity of a particular cultural segment in Hungary, whether they consider it as part of the national literature, and if so, in what framework and with what methodology they attempt to present and process it. The first handbook examined is the first (Latin) lexicon dedicated to Hungarian literature, Specimen Hungariae Literatae, virorum eruditione clarorum natione Hungarorum, Dalmatarum, Croatarum, Slavorum atque Transylvanorum, vitas, scripta, elogia et censuras ordine alphabetico exhibens, published by Dávid Czvittinger in 1711. The latest compendium investigated is the Magyar irodalom (The Hungarian literature), edited by Tibor Gintli, published in 2010 Together with the volumes published in the intervening period, a three-hundred-year history of Hungarian Neo-Latin Studies is presented based on a review of nearly fifteen literary history manuals and five literary lexicons. The context of changes is reflected upon, such as the relationship with the development of academic disciplines, the relationship with the change in the concept of the nation, and the methodological context, including the interaction with positivist, and other research methodologies. In the view of the author, the historical overview of Hungarian Neo-Latin studies may be considered a paradigmatic example not only for Hungary but also for the Central and Eastern European region. Koppi’s efforts not only established a tradition of teaching universal history through modern methodologies but also revealed broader sociological implications. His adaptation extended beyond historiography and pedagogy to include personal career strategies, professional networking, and the cultivation of scholarly ambition and habitus. As a result, Koppi did not merely transfer the Göttingen model but actively reshaped it as a mediator. His dual role as a teacher and a knowledge broker solidified his position as a pivotal figure in fostering a modern scientific ethos, which remained influential in late 18th-century Hungary.
