AB  - The transmission and maintenance of Hungarian standard language ideology is extremely harmful socially because it perpetuates social inequity and reduces the nation's resources. The insistence on speaking Hungarian “correctly”, i.e., that all Hungarians speak their mother tongue “correctly”, is both unrealistic and socially extremely damaging. In addition to anecdotal evidence cited from belletristic authors Gyula Illyés (1930s), Szilárd Borbély (21st century) and others, the results of several sociolinguistic studies are cited to show how unrealistic such expectations are. These studies cover important sociolinguistic variables e.g., t-final verbs and the inessive case ending (bVn) as used by Hungarians in Hungary, in Transcarpathia (Ukraine) and in Transylvania (Rumania). The social harms that result are illustrated by several well-documented cases of linguicism. The author recommends that the evaluation of linguistic phenomena in terms of “correct – incorrect” should be abandoned and replaced by “appropriate – inappropriate” evaluations (where appropriate language use varies according to speech partners and speech situations). The subtractive language education prevalent in Hungarian schools should be replaced by additive education. Teacher training should be revamped similarly, but the most difficult task ahead is changing the culture of widespread belief in “correct Hungarian” and cultivating a more democratic language ideology which, rather than striving to eliminate language variation, respects linguistic varieties and their speakers.

AB  - In 1967, linguist John Lotz, born in Milwaukee but raised mostly in Hungary, called attention to the lack of research on Hungarian American bilingualism at a time when monographs and PhD dissertations described, in great detail, the bilingualism of Norwegian, Greek, Polish, and Finnish people in the US. When I became an associate instructor of Hungarian at Indiana University, Bloomington, in 1978, I embarked on The Project on Hungarian American Bilingualism in South Bend, Indiana. As a result, eighty hours of Hungarian speech and sixty hours of English were recorded, and a book appeared in Hungarian in 1990. Not much later, in 1995, I was involved with the publication of Beyond Castle Garden: An American Hungarian Dictionary of the Calumet Region, compiled and written by Andrew Vázsonyi. The personal reflections comprising this article will deal with some important issues concerning fieldwork in South Bend and will offer a brief characterization of the differences between Hungarian American bilingualism in the 1970s and today. kontram@gmail.com

AB  - Until about 1985, apart from traditional dialectological research, the study of Hungarian in Hungary focused mostly on the Codified Standard Hungarian variety, whose speakers are powerful in social but not in numerical terms. Sociolinguistic research since 1985 has now resulted in a program which embraces not only the 10 million (largely monolingual) Hungarians in Hungary proper, but also the 3 million bi- or multilingual minority Hungarians in the seven neighboring countries (kin-states). This program was initiated by researchers of the Department of Sociolinguistics in the Linguistics Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. This paper offers linguists who do not read Hungarian an overview of this research carried out between 1985 and 2022.

AB  - A városi dialektológia William Labov munkásságával kezdődött az 1960-as évek közepén az Egyesült Államokban. Magyarországon az MTA Nyelvtudományi Intézetében 1985-ben kezdődtek meg az élőnyelvi (szociolingvisztikai) kutatások. A Budapesti Szociolingvisztikai Interjú (röviden: BUSZI) az első jelentős magyar beszélt nyelvi kutatás volt, a terepmunkája 1987-ben (50 interjú), majd 1988‒89-ben (200 interjú) zajlott. A lejegyzés, kódolás, ellenőrzés, majd az adatbázis létrehozása és kutathatóvá tétele 2008-ig tartott. A dolgozat bemutatja a 2021-ben megjelent Tanulmányok a budapesti beszédről című könyvet, majd röviden szó lesz a BUSZI „kisöccséről”, a Szögedi Szociolingvisztikai Interjúról (SZÖSZI) is.
