Increasing internal migration has affected each settlement differently, and from a demographic point of view there are also "winners" and "losers" in this process. Sopron, with almost 63,000 inhabitants, can be counted among the first group, as the town on the Austrian border is one of the most attractive destinations for Hungarian internal migration. In the past, the number of in-migrants usually exceeded the number of out-migrants. The differences depended largely on socio-economic transformations and the political situation of the respective period. In this study, we assess Sopron's position in internal migration and analyse how the different types of internal migration have contributed to migration gains. Based on our empirical research, we show the main demographic and spatial-structural characteristics of the in-migrants to Sopron. In addition, we examine whether there are significant differences in the composition of migrants who arrived before and after the economic crisis of 2008, respectively. In recent decades, the population of Sopron has grown steadily, while the populations in rural and other urban areas have declined. The main reason for the increase was the positive domestic migration balance which increased significantly after the turn of the millennium. Between 1990 and 2016, the population of the town rose by 13,000. This migration gain is primarily due to a temporary inflow. The most important reasons for the significant in-migration to Sopron were: a location-specific advantage after 1989 due to the nearby border, improved accessibility, relative proximity to the Austrian capital and the developed towns of neighbouring Burgenland and, finally, the abolition of all labour market restrictions in Austria in 2011. The results of our survey reveal that the latest economic crisis has brought a significant change in the demographic composition of in-migrants after the turn of the millennium. The newcomers who arrived after 2009 were generally older, less-educated and found low-paying jobs in agriculture, industry and building construction. Their in-migration to Sopron was mainly motivated by job opportunities in Austria. The spatial pattern of their workplaces shows that they usually work in the region of the Austrian capital. Sopron's attraction extended almost over the whole country, and more and more in-migrants arrived from the less developed parts of Hungary. Nowadays, land managers, stakeholders, and scientists are discussing how this process affects the surrounding landscapes. Usually, due to a land mismanagement of agroforestry activities or urbanization plans, river regulations are designed to reduce anthropogenic impacts such as bank erosion, but many of these regulations resulted in a degradation of habitat diversity. Regardless, there is a lack of information about the possible positive effects of meandering from the ecological point of view. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to investigate a 2.12 km long meandering sub-reach of Sajo River, Hungary, in order to evaluate whether the process of meander development can be evaluated as a land degradation processes or whether it can enhance ecological conservation and sustainability. To achieve this goal, an archive of aerial imagery and UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle)-surveys was used to provide a consistent database for a landscape metrics-based analysis to reveal changes in landscape ecological dynamics. Moreover, an ornithological survey was also carried out to assess the composition and diversity of the avifauna. The forest cover was developed in a remarkable pattern, finding a linear relationship between its rate and channel sinuosity. An increase in forest areas did not enhance the rate of landscape diversity since only its distribution became more compact. Eroding riverbanks provided important nesting sites for colonies of protected and regionally declining migratory bird species such as the sand martin. Carbon mineralization kinetics was modelled by fitting five different kinetic models, from which the first-order two pools model was selected for further analysis. The results showed that residue addition increased the rate of C mineralization, particularly in sand samples, where four times as much C was released as CO2 in amended samples as in control samples. Residue addition also affected the kinetic parameters of the two C pools modelled. The mean residence time (MRT) averaged 31.9 days for the fast C pool and 65.1 days for the slow C pool phase in the amended soils, whereas in the control soils MRT1 and MRT2 averaged 52.3 and 94.2 days, respectively. The kinetics of C decomposition was found to be influenced to the greatest extent by soil organic carbon (SOC) content and soil texture. The texture primarily affected the size of the fast carbon pool (C-1): in both the amended and control samples C-1 was increased by the clay content (r = 0.574 and r = 0.554, respectively) and decreased by the sand content (r = -0.771 and r = -0.583, respectively). Our results confirm the fact that texture has a significant role in soil organic matter mineralization, however other parameters also play a crucial role in the decomposition due to the complexity of the processes. The principal goal is to assess if such indicators - established on Earth - could be used on Mars thereby aiding interpretations on the origin of sediments analysed by the ExoMars 2020 rover during its mission. Wind and water transported sand from, respectively, the Sahara Desert and the Maros river bar in Hungary were investigated and treated as mainly aeolian and fluvial end-members. In addition, two Mars-analogue aeolian and fluvial basaltic sediments from Iceland were analysed similarly. Our analyses demonstrated that useful parameters for the distinction of aeolian and fluvial transport included the degree of sorting, the grain diameter/perimeter ratio, the circularity (reflecting the sphericity of the grains) and convexity (showing roughness of the grains) of particles. Mature aeolian sands are always well-sorted with high diameter/perimeter ratios since they are dominated by rounded grains. Differences were observed in both surface textures and the range of mineral compositions, wherein the aeolian samples reflect a more mature state. Separation of the two Icelandic samples with different origins was less straightforward due to both shorter transport distances and the fact that the fluvial sample was made of scoria, although the intermixing of grains with a probable aeolian origin could be also determined. The characteristics of grain size and shape parameters are potential indicators allowing the separation of the two transport modes, and their determination is shown to be feasible based on high resolution Close-UP Imager (CLUPI) observations. Nonetheless, knowledge of the geological context - for instance sedimentary facies, layering, sorting of the sediments and grain shape - is a requirement for proper interpretations. These sedimentary features could be party determined by MaMISS, CLUPI and PanCam observations. Differences between aeolian and fluvial grains are expected to be more pronounced on Mars than on Earth due to the episodic and likely short-term subaqueous transport, as opposed to the long-term activity of wind. According to the studied literature, the most accepted method is described by [1], [2] and [3]. The whole rock sample, containing several different carbonates, is reacted with 100 % orthophosphoric acid at 25 °C for 6, 24 and 48 hours to extract sequentially the different carbonate minerals (i.e., calcite, dawsonite, ankerite) and analyze their carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions. However, it is unclear if the isotope composition obtained by this method is representative for only one phase or the whole rock. In the present study, we used pure mineral phases (calcite, dolomite, ankerite, dawsonite, siderite) to react them with 100 % orthophosphoric acid at 25 °C for 1, 6, 24 and 48 hours and determined the amount of CO2, which is the result of the acid reaction and analyzed their carbon and oxygen isotopic composition. The amount and isotopic composition of CO2 gas developed during the dissolution of calcite and dawsonite have not been changed significantly after one hour, suggesting that these carbonates cannot be separated by using different reaction times. Majority of ankerite and dolomite was reacted in the first 24 hours, thus these minerals also cannot be separated from each other only by using distinct reaction times. In addition, the isotopic composition of ankerite and dolomite does not show significant variation after 24 hours. Our work proved that this widely used method is inappropriate to separate properly the carbonate minerals as the CO2, produced during the acid reaction, represents a mixture, which is originated from the carbonate minerals in different proportions. Instead, we suggest to separate the carbonate minerals from the dawsonite-bearing sandstones and to analyze them separately. Based on these results, we carried out stable isotope analysis in dawsonite-bearing sandstones of natural CO2 occurrence, which located in Mihályi-Répcelak area (W-Hungary). It is well known that Cs is absorbed reversibly into clay minerals (e.g illite), occurring in production of weathering processes and soils, which contain most of the Cs in the upper crust where its abundance is 2.6 ppm. From the environmental perspective Cs-137 is a principal artificial radionuclide (t1/2 =30 years) generated by nuclear fission process in nuclear bombs, nuclear weapons testing, and nuclear reactor operations. It also contributes to the radioactivity of spent nuclear fuel even after decades of cooling. Significant amount of Cs-137 were released into atmosphere by nuclear weapons testing following the II. World War and from the major nuclear accidents (Chernobyl in 1986 and Fukushima in 2011). From atmosphere, Cs-137 easily adsorbs to precipitation and it returns back to lithosphere (pedosphere) as radioactive fallout component. Due to the Chernobyl nuclear accident, the released contaminated air mass, containing particles with attached Cs, largely propagated, deposited and distributed across several European countries in the ambient environment (Balonov et al., 1996). These particles could have reached the houses (e.g. through open windows, doors, cracks and vents) and deposited inside resulting in the exposition of the habitants to radiocesium, especially in areas that are not accessible for a regular cleaning like attics. This radioactive isotope can contaminate natural food chains and subsequently be incorporated into human body triggering internal harm. The gamma-emission product of the decay of radiocesium can cause chemical/genetic damage depending on concentration and considering its long half-life (Brisbin and Dallas, 2008). In addition, Cs-137 is an effective tracer to demonstrate area covered by radioactive emission of nuclear operations, and used successfully to study soil erosion and sediment accumulation rates. The human exposition to Cs-137 in indoor environments has not been studied yet. Therefore, the goal of this study is to determine the activity concentration of Cs-137 in attic dust, which depends on atmospheric transportation processes and human activity. Additionally, our study shows city-scaled spatial distribution of Cs-137 in function of age and altitude of houses which have not been studied in details. Description of the site Salgótarján city is located at 299 m above sea level in the north-eastern part of Nógrád county, Hungary, with total area of 103 km2 and population is over 35 800 residents. The main geological formations of the studied area, occurring at the surface, are Neogene andesite, basalt and different sandstones, and rarely rhyolite tuff and brown coal. The dominating soil type of the urban area is brown forest soil. Salgótarján was a major industrial center and played a significant economic role in Hungary, starting with coal mining and significant industrial structure (steel, iron and glass works) from the 18th to end of the 20th century. 168 Materials methods and results Sampling of attic dusts was based on the EuroGeoSurveys urban geochemical sampling protocol. The study area was divided into 38 identical grid cells with area of 1 km2 and in each cell, bulk/average attic dust samples were taken mainly from old (>30 years) houses, where it was possible to collect dust as a result of long term deposition. Activity concentration of Cs-137 was determined in attic dust samples <0.125 millimeter grain size, using a well-type HPGe detector placed in a lowbackground iron chamber at the laboratory of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Center for Energy Research. The activity concentrations were determined in 36 attic dust samples (collected from family houses n=28, churches n=5, and kindergartens n=3). The year of construction of these selected houses ranged from 1880-1989 and the altitudes varied between 204 and 502 meter above sea level. The obtained Cs-137 activity ranges from 4.9±0.3 Bq/kg to 140.7±7.7 Bq/kg (detection limit: 0.9 Bq/kg). The arithmetic average is 71.4±3 Bq/kg, whereas the median value is 72.2±2.5 Bq/kg. Discussion and conclusions Based on categories of sampling sites, ranges of Cs-137 activity concentrations in churches are: 5±0.3-124.4±3.3 Bq/kg, kindergartens: 38.7±2- 98.7±4.4 Bq/kg, family houses: 4.9±0.5 to 140.7±7.7 Bq/kg. Other studies showed that Cs-137 in soil from Pest county, Hungary (mean-9.5 Bq/kg, Szabó et al., 2012) and soil from Transylvania, Romania (mean=8.3 Bq/kg, Begy et al., 2017) are much lower than in our samples. Our study confirmed that attic dust can potentially remain undisturbed for decades and may act as a historical record of particulate components of atmospheric pollution. Altitude of the study area is gradually decreasing from northeast to southwest. Along this direction we found correlation (r2 =0.5) between activity concentration values and altitudes, similarly to reports by Begy et al. (2017) for Transylvania. There is a significant correlation (r2 =0.8) between the year of house construction and the activity concentrations for family houses (102±5.2-140±7.7 Bq/kg) built from 1922 to 1960. Ilacqua et al. (2003) found similar phenomena in New Jersey (Arithmetic average-75Bq/kg±5.3Bq/kg) concluding that the older houses accummulated larger amount of Cs-137 in attic dust than the younger ones. Previous results show that the most sensitive minerals are carbonates in the CO2-pore water-rock system. Hence, after CO2-flooding, firstly carbonates dissolve in the pore water, which is a result of pore water acidification. Furthermore, dissolution of carbonates buffers the system, and, when the pH is around neutral carbonates can re-precipitate and dawsonite may form in the sandstone reservoir. In this study, we analyzed different chemical parameters of carbonates such as major and trace element compositions and stable isotope ratio of carbonates from Mihályi-Répcelak natural CO2 occurrence. The result of these analyses and Raman spectroscopy were compared to the geochemical properties of samples from the same geological facies without CO2. Geological background Sedimentation and filling of the Pannonian Basin started from the northwestern direction around 10 Ma. The delta and fluvial sediments filled the basin from deep basin to the delta plane. MihályiRépcelak area is one of the best known CO2 occurrence in the Pannonian Basin. The CO2 was trapped in the turbiditic sandstones about 7-4 million years ago (Palcsu et al., 2014). To understand the consequence of natural CO2 flooding, we chose the Szolnok area as a reference reservoir rock, where CO2 did not trap in the sandstone reservoirs. The studied samples originated from turbiditic sandstones, which deposited around 6 Ma (Magyar et al., 2013). Results and Discussion Our preliminary results on the mineralogy of the natural CO2 reservoir rocks show different types of carbonates, assumed to be the most sensitive to physical-chemical changes, are clustered in three groups in the Mihályi-Répcelak area. The first group is detrital dolomite, whereas the second one is diagenetic (before the CO2 flooding) calcite, siderite and ankerite. These minerals are believed to be partly or fully dissolved after the CO2 flooding. The third group consists of calcite, ankerite, siderite and dawsonite, which are assumed to incorporate CO2 in their structures. The textural position of carbonate minerals show that dawsonite, some of the ankerite, siderite and calcite precipitated simultaneously. It should be noted that the occurrence of dawsonite is suggested to be the most visible effect of CO2 flooding. In contrast to the natural CO2 occurrence (Mihályi-Répcelak), the other studied area (Szolnok region) is practically CO2-free, hence the turbiditic sandstone does not contain dawsonite. Dolomite is also detrital, furthermore diagenetic calcite, ankerite and siderite are also observed in this sample (Sendula, 2015). In this study all types of carbonates (detrital, diagenetic, CO2 trapping) were analyzed by EPMA, in situ trace element measurement and mapping by LA-ICP-MS, Raman spectrometer and partly by 84 stable isotope mass spectrometer for C and O to better characterize their geochemical features. The results show that the calcite and dolomite are pure minerals in the natural CO2 occurrence. The composition of ankerite can be divided into two groups based on Fe-content in case of MihályiRépcelak area. The Fe2+ concentration of carbonates in the Szolnok area shows a continuous transition from dolomite to siderite (Sendula, 2015). Furthermore, the ∑REY concentration is directly proportional to the concentration of Fe2+ in both areas. The stable isotope ratios were only measured in the carbonate minerals from the natural CO2 occurrence. The calculated carbon isotopic composition of CO2 in equilibrium with dawsonite and siderite shows different values. The d13C value inferred from dawsonite stable isotopic composition overlaps with those observed in the CO2 gas indicating magmatic origin. Moreover, the d13C values calculated for siderite are considerably lower than that of dawsonite suggesting the presence of modified or different CO2 source during the siderite formation. Conclusions Carbonate minerals from a CO2-bearing and a CO2-barren occurrence of the same geological formation were analyzed concerning their geochemical composition, in order to compare their behavior in the different environments. Geochemical parameters (siderite and dawsonite precipitated from different solutions; ∑REY concentration is in close relation with Fe2+ concentration, differences in the Fe2+ in ankerite of the two areas) are expected to provide a new insight into dissolution and precipitation processes of carbonates related to the occurrence of CO2. Összegzés A CO2 geológiai tárolása során az eddigi vizsgálatok alapján a karbonátásványok a legérzékenyebbek a fizikai-kémiai változásokra. Ebben a munkában a karbonátásványok geokémiai tulajdonságainak változása alapján körvonalazzuk, hogy egyes ásványok milyen folyamatokon mehettek keresztül. Ennek érdekében ugyanabba a formációba tartozó, Mihályi-Répcelak természetes CO2 előfordulás homokövét és Szolnok környékéről származó CO2-mentes homokkövet vizsgáltuk fő- és nyomelem összetételét. A természetes CO2 előfordulás mintáinak stabil izotóp összetétele is hozzájárul, hogy jobban megértsük egyes ásványok kialakulásának környezetét. Az előzetes eredmények alapján a két terület különbözik az ankerit Fe2+ által meghatározott zónáinak számában. Az ankeritben dúsuló REY egyenes arányosságban áll a Fe2+ koncentrációjával mind a két területen. A stabil izotópvizsgálatok alapján a dawsonit és a sziderit más eredetű fluidumból válhatott ki. Az Európai Unió tagországainak jelentős erőfeszítéseket kell tenni kibocsátásuk drasztikus csökkentése érdekben, amelynek egyik lehetséges eszköze az ipari és energetikai pontforrások CO 2 kibocsátásának leválasztása és az arra alkalmas geológiai tárolókba történő hosszú távú/végleges tárolása. A tagországoknak vizsgálniuk kell a területükön található, CO 2 hosszú távú tárolására potenciálisan alkalmas geológiai objektumokat. Az ipari folyamatokból származó CO2 leválasztása és felszín alatti tárolókban való elhelyezése (Carbon Capture and Storage) a CO2 emisszió csökkentésére lehet megoldás. A CO2 geológiai tárolása során kulcs kérdéseként merül fel, hogy milyen fizikai és geokémiai folyamatok játszódnak le a geológiai tárolóban. Ezeknek a reakcióknak a megismeréséhez nyújt segítséget a természetes CO2 előfordulások vizsgálata ott, ahol a CO2 geológiai időskálán megőrződött. A nagy mennyiségű CO2 hatására egy új karbonát ásvány (dawsonit [NaAlCO3(OH)2]) jelenhet meg a rendszerben. A dawsonitot a világon számos helyen kimutatták a természetes CO2 előfordulások vizsgálata során (pl. Kína, Ausztrália), azonban jelenleg nem ismertek pontosan azok a fizikai és kémiai körülmények, amelyek a dawsonit képződéséhez szükségesek. Továbbá egyelőre feltáratlan maradt a dawsonit stabil izotópok szempontjából mutatott frakcionációs viselkedése (így pl. dawsonit-CO2, dawsonit-víz között lejátszódó frakcionáció) is. Ezért, hogy jobban megértsük a képződési folyamatát, Kovásznáról dawsonitot gyűjtöttünk és meghatároztuk stabil C, O és H izotóp összetételét, amelyből a képződésekor jelenlévő CO2 és pórusvíz eredetére következtethetünk. A természetes CO2-rezervoárokkal szemben különleges, hogy a Kovásznáról gyűjtött dawsonit nem fúrómagból, több száz méteres mélységből származik (200-2000 m), hanem a felszínen, a Hankó-patak mentén fordul elő. A begyűjtött homokkő minta sztereomikroszkópos vizsgálata során azonosítottuk a dawsonitot (1. ábra), amelyet röntgen-pordiffrakciós és pásztázó elektronmikroszkópos vizsgálattal is megerősítettünk. A dawsonit általában a homokkő felszínén és repedéseiben fehér színű szálas ásványként jelenik meg, bár tömeges formában is megtalálható szórtan a gyűjtött minták felületén. Pásztázó elektronmikroszkópos vizsgálatok alapján a dawsonit mellett realgár, aragonit, ankerit, sziderit, káliföldpát és kvarc is megfigyelhető.
