This seems to be at odds with widespread acceptance of principles of fairness and egalitarian gender ideologies in those societies today. This paper aims at identifying the direct effects of traditional gender norms that imply unequal rights and the consequences of role expectations (congruent with egalitarian essentialism) as distinct mechanisms leading to inequality. In a series of survey experiments (pooled n = 3191) conducted in Hungary, respondents evaluated the division of chores in a fictitious dual-earner household presented on a vignette. Versions of the vignette differ in gender typicality, and in whether chores are described in text or in number of hours worked. Our data indicate that discriminatory patriarchal norms could contribute to cultural foundations of unequal family relations in present-day Hungary. However, we also show that unbalanced division of tasks can be supported even in those social milieus where inequality—when becomes salient—is perceived as equally amoral, regardless of whether the woman or the man does more housework. In this latter case, inequality is an unreflected consequence of traditional expectations of masculinity and femininity.}, year = {2026}, eissn = {1573-3475}, orcid-numbers = {Janky, Béla/0000-0003-1625-0859; Réz, Anna/0000-0002-9605-6599} } @article{MTMT:36718708, title = {Polarization of social attitudes in Hungary in the 2010s: a survey-experiment on the role of partisan identity}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/36718708}, author = {Janky, Béla}, doi = {10.1080/25739638.2025.2597799}, journal-iso = {J Cont Cent East Eur}, journal = {JOURNAL OF CONTEMPORARY CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE}, unique-id = {36718708}, issn = {2573-9638}, abstract = {Since the mid-2010s, public discourse in Hungary has undergone significant changes, characterized by a shift in focus towards issues less relevant to voters’ daily lives and increased polarization of public attitudes along political lines. This paper explores the role of partisan identity in shaping attitude polarization. It posits that, beyond material interests or stable moral values, partisan identity independently influences social attitudes. Using a series of survey experiments conducted between 2016 and 2018, the effect of the salience of political conflict on attitudes about politically salient issues, such as immigration policy and the regulation of foreign-funded NGOs is investigated. Results indicate that partisan identity independently contributes to the polarization of attitudes, with respondents exposed to certain politicized issues aligning their views more closely with stereotypical partisan positions on other issues. The paper critiques existing experimental paradigms in political behaviour research and highlights the importance of incorporating social psychological approaches to understand the interplay between partisan identity and public opinion formation.}, year = {2025}, eissn = {2573-9646}, orcid-numbers = {Janky, Béla/0000-0003-1625-0859} } @article{MTMT:35433584, title = {Magyar folyóiratok, nyílt adatok és a globalizált tudományos diskurzus}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/35433584}, author = {Janky, Béla}, doi = {10.51624/SzocSzemle.16110}, journal-iso = {SZOCIOLÓGIAI SZEMLE}, journal = {SZOCIOLÓGIAI SZEMLE}, volume = {34}, unique-id = {35433584}, issn = {1216-2051}, abstract = {-}, year = {2024}, eissn = {1588-2853}, pages = {93-99} } @article{MTMT:32526392, title = {The Role of the Deservingness Criteria in the case of Single Mothers’ Perceived Welfare Deservingness in Hungary}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/32526392}, author = {Herke, Boglárka and Janky, Béla}, doi = {10.1017/S004727942100074X}, journal-iso = {J SOC POLICY}, journal = {JOURNAL OF SOCIAL POLICY}, volume = {52}, unique-id = {32526392}, issn = {0047-2794}, abstract = {A growing number of studies investigate the relative importance of the major deservingness criteria (control, attitude, reciprocity, identity, need) in explaining the perceived welfare deservingness of different social groups. This paper addresses the roles of those criteria in predicting the perceived deservingness of a rarely examined group, single mothers. We conducted a survey in Hungary and compare the responses to direct questions about deservingness to the results of a vignette-based survey experiment in which the deservingness criteria were translated to characteristics of hypothetical mothers. Our results show that in the absence of deservingness cues (direct questions), respondents relied on the attitude, reciprocity/control, identity (measured by traditional family values), and need criteria to the same extent. On the other hand, in the presence of specific deservingness cues (vignette experiment), people disregarded their family values and stereotypes, and the perceived need became the strongest predictor of single mothers’ deservingness. These results support the existence of the deservingness heuristic, however, compared to previous literature that emphasized the role of perceived control and reciprocity of recipients, in the case of single mothers, the deservingness heuristic seems to direct people’s attention to the perception of need.}, year = {2023}, eissn = {1469-7823}, pages = {560-580} } @article{MTMT:33628413, title = {Limits of household's energy efficiency improvements and its consequence – A case study for Hungary}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/33628413}, author = {Gróf, Gyula István and Janky, Béla and Bethlendi, András}, doi = {10.1016/j.enpol.2022.113078}, journal-iso = {ENERGY POLICY}, journal = {ENERGY POLICY}, volume = {168}, unique-id = {33628413}, issn = {0301-4215}, year = {2022}, eissn = {1873-6777}, orcid-numbers = {Gróf, Gyula István/0000-0002-6359-768X; Bethlendi, András/0000-0003-3219-0251} } @article{MTMT:32464883, title = {Really Trapped in the Heat?.
