A Magyar Ifjúság Kutatások (MIK) során 2016-ban és 2020-ban két klasszifikációs eljárást alkalmaztak a kutatók: a megkérdezettek önmagukat sorolhatták be, attól függően, hogy milyen „nemzetiségűnek” vallották magukat. Ugyanakkor a kérdezés során sor került a fiatalok külső „besorolására” is, a kérdezőbiztosok döntötték el, hogy a megkérdezett roma, vagy nem roma.
