The research aims were to estimate the potential carbon stock and describe the carbon distribution of the short rotation coppice bioenergy plantation above and below ground. Various sources were used to acquire parameterization data for developing forest carbon dynamic models. CO2FIX modeling V.3.2 was utilized in the data analysis to estimate the total carbon stock in biomass, soil, harvested wood products, and bioenergy compartments. Modeling has been around for 45 years. In this research, the total carbon stock of black locust and poplar at the end of the simulation period was 64.13 and 131.08 MgC.ha-1, respectively. The average carbon allocation above and below ground for black locust and poplar was 0.76, 19.76, 1.80, and 21.67 MgC.ha-1, respectively. In conclusion, poplar outperformed black locust regarding carbon storage in the short rotation coppice bioenergy plantation. Below ground carbon allocation was much higher than above ground. We also estimated the effect of product and energy substitution and the magnitude of avoided emissions based on international substitution factors. According to our results in the period 1985–2021 the average of the HWP net emissions plus substitution effects was -3,800 kt CO2. In this period the 49% of the forest industry-related climate benefits was attributable to carbon storage in forests, while 4% was attributable to carbon storage in wood products and 47% to product and energy substitution. According to our projection the HWP net emissions plus substitution effects could reach -14,994 kt CO2 up to 2050 under an intensified domestic wood processing industry. Projection of forest carbon for a certain period can be used to develop other actions to mitigate climate change, such as public policy, forest management scenarios, and other interventions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The CO2FIX model estimates carbon content through empirical growth data that is a user-friendly measurement for forest managers. This review article aims to describe the research trends in forest carbon dynamics modeling using CO2FIX. Our findings show that CO2FIX has been applied to a wide range of forest types in 27 countries. The most productive researchers have come from China, India, the Netherlands, and Spain. However, collaboration among researchers across countries has been limited. The number of articles related to CO2FIX indexed by the Scopus or the Web of Science (WoS) database has gradually increased since the first was published in 1995. Furthermore, the top five items used in the CO2FIX publications were carbon sequestration, CO2FIX, carbon, forestry, and forest management. In conclusion, CO2FIX is a user-friendly, forest carbon dynamics model that is used widely by researchers for various types of forests and results in a precise estimation. Environmental assessment is a possible tool to describe the potential sequestration of carbon and greenhouse gas emissions. The forest carbon stock and life cycle assessment approach was used here to analyze poplar plantations in Hungary. This study aims to describe the research trends of environmental assessment of poplar plantations in Hungary using VOSviewer software. A total of 1,528 documents from the Scopus database were used in this research. VOSviewer analysis was conducted to detail the bibliometric maps from generic (“forest” OR “forestry” AND “Hungary”), medium (“poplar” AND “Hungary”), and specific (“poplar” AND “carbon” AND “Hungary” / (“poplar” AND “life cycle assessment”) OR (“LCA” AND “Hungary”). The findings show that the number of documents on forest research in Hungary has increased significantly since the 2000s. However, items on environmental assessment, either forest carbon or life cycle assessment, produced only a tiny number with weak links. In conclusion, i). the large number of collected documents produced more clusters; ii). The item of Hungary is the most frequently used keyword in the research article; and iii). Within different activities in the forest, wood utilisation has the most significant man-made environmental impact which affects the carbon balance, which is important to know, to be able to accurately identify its role in climate change. This study aims to determine the carbon footprint of logging during utilisation based on scenario analysis in national default and theoretical assortment structures (11 additional scenarios for each forest stand) within the entire life cycle of raw wood products. Based on a common functional unit (100 m 3 of cut wood), a comparative environmental life cycle analysis (LCA) for intermediate and final cutting was performed in shortwood forestry work systems in beech ( Fagus spp. ), oak ( Quercus spp. ), spruce ( Picea spp. ), black locust ( Robinia pseudoacacia ), and hybrid poplar ( Populus x euramericana ) stands in Hungary. After obtaining the results, the present study calculated the carbon footprint order for the utilisation life cycle phases and the entire tree utilisation life cycle. The distribution of absolute carbon footprint (ACF: considered emitted CO 2 from fossil and biotic origins together) by final cutting exhibited the following order: hybrid poplar (6%)—spruce (8%)—beech (26%)—oak (27%)—black locust (33%). The ACF ranking for the whole technological life cycle (intermediate and final cutting, 400 m3 of cut wood) was hybrid poplar– spruce—oak—beech–black locust. In this study, we examined the carbon storage and CO2 and CH4 emissions under different scenarios of 200,000 m3 particleboard manufactured in 2020 by a hypothetical manufacturer. The scope of our investigation was to model the effects of a changing product lifetime, recycling rates and waste management practices on the duration of the carbon storage in wood panels and on their emission patterns. The aim of the investigation was to identify the most climate-friendly practices and find the combination of measures related to HWP production and waste management with the highest climate mitigation effect. We used the newly developed HWP-RIAL (recycling, incineration and landfill) model for the projections, which is a combination of two IPCC models parametrized for Hungarian circumstances and supplemented with a self-developed recycling and waste-route-selection submodule. The model runs covered the period 2020–2130. According to the results, the combined scenario with bundled mitigation activities had the largest mitigation potential in the modelled period, resulting in 32% emission reduction by 2050 as compared to the business-as-usual scenario. Amongst individual mitigation activities, increased recycling rates had the largest mitigation effect. The lifetime extension of particleboard can be a complementary measure to support climate mitigation efforts, along with the concept of cascade use and that of circular bioeconomy. This research aimed to describe commercial bamboo species (Bambusa vulgaris, Gigantochloa apus, and Gigantochloa atroviolacea) and their morphological features. Data collecting was carried out and bamboo samples were taken for measuring the DBH, total height, and the number of internodes. The research findings showed that the four commercial bamboo species have similar values of diameter. However, the total height and number of internodes varied. Gigantochloa apus has the highest value for the total height and Bambusa vulgaris var. Vitata has shown the highest value for the number of internodes. This study estimates the amount of carbon stored in the Hungarian harvested wood product (HWP) pool and the CO2 emissions and removals of the pool. According to our results, the total carbon stock of the Hungarian HWP pool is continuously increasing. We estimated the total carbon stock of the HWP pool to be 17,306 kt C in the year 2020. Our results show that the HWP pool in Hungary is a carbon sink in most parts of the time series, with some years where it turns to a source of emissions. We carried out a simple projection up to 2070, assuming a constant inflow for the projected years that is equal to the average inflow of the last five historic years. This resulted in a decreasing trend in CO2 removals, with removals already very close to zero in 2070.
