Soils play a significant role in the long-term sequestration of atmospheric CO2, while in other cases they can also become net carbon emitters. Therefore, it is important to know what can be expected regarding future changes in the carbon storage capacity of soils in forests. We used precipitation gradient studies to solve this problem, using a type of “space–time” substitution. In this research, we primarily examined the quality parameters of soil organic matter (SOM) to investigate how climate change transforms the ratio of the main SOM compound groups in soils. For our studies, we applied elemental and 13C and 15N isotopic ratio analysis, NMR analysis, FT-IR spectra analysis, thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses to measure SOM chemistry in samples from different oak forests with contrasting mean annual precipitation from Central Europe. Our results showed that soil organic carbon (SOC) was lower in soils of humid forests due to the enhanced decomposition processes and the leaching of Ca, which stabilizes SOM; however, in particular, the amount of easily degradable SOM compounds (e.g., thermolabile SOM, O-alkyl carbon, carboxylic and carbonyl carbon) decreased. In dry forest soils, the amount of recalcitrant SOM (e.g., thermostable SOM, alkyl carbon, aromatic and phenolic carbon and organo–mineral complexes stabilized by Ca increased, but the amount of easily degradable SOM increased further. In our statistically representative questionnaire survey completed in Győr-Moson-County schools in Hungary, we aimed to discover which components of attitude determine the willingness of future energy users to use wood. A novelty of our study is that we investigated three components of attitude in the context of wood use, i.e., the cognitive, the affective, and the conative components. We used Decision Trees in statistics, hitherto unemployed in wood-related environmental education research, to predict the willingness to use the raw wood material. Our study is relevant to sustainable development and climate protection. Our results revealed that only one-third of participants provided an affirmative response to the question of whether they would use raw wood material. Furthermore, we found that the affective component of attitude is a stronger predictor than the cognitive component, with the conative component not being a predictor. The average annual precipitation of HFor is 705mm, for DFor 560 mm, this difference is mainly responsible for the pH difference (pH 5.3 & 6.9). Accordingly, the fungi biomass (ergosterol test) of the HFor topsoil was significantly higher (60%) than that of DFor. Since higher precipitation values result in a much higher leaching rate, so due to the leaching of compounds of alkaline and alkaline earth metals the annual litter production of HFor is 31% higher than in DFor. Thus, the return of these compounds resulting from the litter production is more intense in HFor. Larger leaching is associated with faster degradation, which explains the significantly lower content of organic C in HFor (38%). Arylsulfatase plays significant role in the nutrient cycle, releases sulphate compounds that can be taken up by plants from organic sulfur-containing compounds. In the case of HFor, significantly higher (p=0.01) aryl sulfatase activity was measured than in DFor forests, which can be explained by the larger amount of degrading microorganisms, especially fungi. This is supported by the positive correlation between aryl sulfatase activity and fungal biomass. Honos fafajaink becsült reakciói alapján elemeztük őshonos fafajú erdőtársulásaink várható átrendeződését. Potenciális, invázióbiológiai szempontból alacsony kockázatú cserefafajokat kerestünk a várhatóan visszaszoruló fafajaink esetleges helyettesítésére. A honos és inváziós fafafajok esetében országos adatokon nyugvó, cserefafajok esetében európai léptékű modellezéssel is becsültük a fajok potenciális és prognosztikus elterjedését. Potenciális természetes erdőtársulás (PTE) adatbázist építettünk fel az ország erdőterületeire az Országos Erdőállomány Adattár alapján, a jelenre és jövőre vonatkozóan egyaránt. Eredményeink alapján az erdő- és erdőssztyep-társulások esetében egyaránt a magas összetételi (elegyesség) és szerkezeti diverzitás (gyepekkel, cserjésekkel mozaikoló állományok) jelenthet nagyobb alkalmazkodóképességet. Four independent approaches confirmed the near-linear decline of growth and vitality with increasing hot droughts in summer, using sessile oak as model species. The correlation between droughts and the expansion of pest and disease damages was also found to be significant. Projections of expected changes of main site factors predict a dramatic rise of future drought frequency and, consequently, a substantial shift of forest climate classes, especially at low elevation. Excess water-dependent lowland forests may lose supply from groundwater, which may change vegetation cover and soil development processes.
