Consequently, in some two hundred countries around the world, very different models have developed and are still changing, and there is even a wave of regulation, mainly in the direction of liberalisation. It is, however, natural that changes to abortion legislation should be a divisive issue in all countries, with forces often divided into the simplistic categories of pro-life and pro-choice. These debates often cross-national borders and can be so powerful that they can affect the legal systems of entire regions. Given that in recent years a large number of countries around the world have changed their abortion legislation, it is reasonable to speak of a crisis in this area. The constitutional and supreme courts of the various countries are important players in the search for a way out of this crisis, and their decisions have in many cases helped to set the legal path for regulating abortion.
