The chapter explores the semantic variability ofthe deictic temporal adverb most ‘now’
inHungarian, also describing the time reference of some frequent most + particle combinations
and theparticipation of most in clausal constructions. Theanalyses are based on data
from the Hungarian National Corpus butremain strictly qualitative in nature. The proposed
semantic accountrelies on such cognitive factors as grouping, contrast, anddirection
of mental scanning, with non-primary meanings motivated bymetonymy and deictic projection.
In the analysis of most in clausal constructions, a key concern isto describe its
role as a contextualizer, both in a broader sense oflinking the onstage process to
an offstage, context-dependentreference point and in the narrower sense of functioning
as ananchor for information processing.
