Vannak tevékenységek, mint például a mezőgazdálkodás és az élelmiszeripar, amely viszonylag nagy mennyiséget használ fel belőle. Ma már tudjuk, hogy a felhasználás és a szennyezés következtében a víz fizikai, kémiai, biológiai és bakteriológiai tulajdonságai károsan megváltoznak, ezért emberi használatra részben vagy teljesen alkalmatlanná válik, illetve a természetes vízi életfolyamatok és ezáltal a ráépülő ökoszisztémák visszafordíthatatlan kárt szenvedhetnek benne. Az ivóvíz minőségének megőrzése és a környezetszennyezés megelőzése például szennyvízkezelésen keresztül egymástól nem választható külön, hanem egymást kiegészítő folyamatok, tevékenységek együttese. Nyíregyházán a lakosság számára szolgáltatott ivóvíz rétegvíz eredetű, amely kisebb mértékben van kitéve a szennyező forrásoknak, mint például a felszíni vizek. There are activities such as agriculture and the food industry that use relatively large amounts of it. We now know that as a result of use and pollution, the physical, chemical, biological and bacteriological properties of water change in a harmful way, so that it becomes partially or completely unfit for human use, and the natural aquatic life processes and thus the ecosystems built on it can suffer irreversible damage. Preservation of the quality of drinking water and prevention of environmental pollution, for example through waste water treatment, cannot be chosen separately, but rather are complementary processes and activities. The drinking water supplied to the population in Nyíregyháza is of aquifer origin, which is less exposed to polluting sources than, for example, surface water. Every source of drinking water has some production and transport risk.
