This study aims to 1) identify the IT governance (ITG) mechanisms that small businesses are likely to need during the digital transformation (DT) journey and 2) propose a pattern catalogue about IT governance mechanisms suitable for small businesses. IT governance is critical to help small businesses plan and control their DT strategy. This study would complement knowledge regarding the antecedents of successful DT among small businesses and could be a further research agenda. The findings of this study would benefit further research endeavors. This study used a systematic literature review and thematic analysis techniques. We have tabulated the review results of the primary articles. Based on the review findings, we propose a pattern catalogue about IT governance mechanisms that are expected to be more suitable for small businesses to manage and control their DT journey. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
