In our study, we present two fake artworks in which the sphinx appears as a dominant
symbol. Although their forms and motifs do not exactly follow ancient models, they
have nevertheless fooled some scholars. The fakes appeared in Transylvania in the
first half of the 19th century, one of them certainly linked to the notorious forger,
antique dealer Sámuel Literáti Nemes.
