A „káoszharc”, az életet fenyegető erők leküzdése az ószövetségi szentírók szerint
Izrael Istenének, az egyetlen Úrnak a hatáskörébe tartozik. A teremtés nem egyszeri
esemény, hanem folyamat: ezért a rend létrehozása és fenntartása JHVH részéről szüntelen
küzdelmet jelent. Az ószövetségi teremtésteológia, illetve a szabadítás teológiája
(exodus) is magában foglalja a mélységvizek, illetve a nagy tenger strukturálását
és megszelídítését. A káoszt mitikus lények jelenítik meg, amelyeket az ókori Kelet
hagyománya értelmében Izrael Istenének is le kell győznie. A babiloni fogság után
azonban Leviatán, Rahab és a többi káoszszörny egyre inkább történelmi entitásokká,
politikai nagyhatalmak jelképeivé válnak. | Chaoskampf, the overcoming of the forces
that threaten life, is the responsibility of the God of Israel: the one LORD, according
to the Old Testament writers. Creation is not a single event, but a continuous process,
and therefore the establishment and maintenance of order is a ceaseless struggle for
YHWH. In the Old Testament, both the theology of creation and the theology of redemption
(Exodus) involve the structuring and domestication of the waters of the deep or the
big sea. Chaos is represented by mythical creatures which, in the tradition of the
ancient East, the God of Israel must also overcome. After the Babylonian captivity,
however, Leviathan, Rahab and the others become more and more historical entities,
signs for great political powers.
