A könyvvizsgálati kockázat csökkentése során a lényegesség meghatározásának tehát kiemelt jelentősége van, amelynek szabályait a könyvvizsgálati standardok tartalmazzák. Azonban ezek az általános előírások (ISA 315, ISA 320, ISA 450) normál céghelyzeteket feltételeznek és az egyedi pénzügyi kimutatásokra vonatkozóan fogalmaznak meg alkalmazható szabályokat. Felmerülhet bennünk az a kérdés, hogy hogyan kell alkalmazni ezeket a szabályokat, ha nem egyetlen vállalkozás, hanem egy vállalatcsoport konszolidált pénzügyi kimutatása, vagy nem normál, hanem speciális céghelyzet (átalakulás, egyesülés, szétválás) esetén kell a lényegességet értelmezni.
