The article primarily examines how the profitability of Hungarian agricultural
companies developed in 2022 and 2023, and how exposed Hungarian
agriculture is to weather changes. In the study, two databases were used.
Eurostat's agricultural database for international comparison and a database of financial
statements of agricultural firms to assess the performance of each subsector. The
conclusions of the article are as follows: The contribution of agriculture to Hungary's
GDP is gradually decreasing, as it is a very risky and low-profitability sector
(on average). Nothing in the company database is reflected in the large increase
in production value reported to Eurostat. State aid does not outweigh the risk
of farming. The sector seems to be lagging behind in wage competition.
