Az üzleti környezet e kihívásainak való megfelelés a vállalatok meglévő üzleti modelljeinek átalakítását, fejlesztését vonja maga után. Jelen tanulmány alapját képező kutatás az alkalmazotti létszám alapján legnagyobb magyarországi vállalatok (főleg közép- és nagyvállalati szektor) vizsgálatára irányult, fókuszába a környezeti stratégiák jelenlegi és várható fejlettségi szintjeit állítva. A kutatás kérdőíves megkérdezés keretében zajlott. Az eredmények elemzése során a szerzők a klaszteranalízis módszerét alkalmazták. A környezeti stratégiák szintje szerinti klaszterezés eredményeként három jól elkülöníthető csoport alakult ki a vizsgált vállalatok halmazában (Élenjárók, Ébredezők, Lemaradók) mind a jelenre, mind pedig 3-5 éves jövőbeni időtávra vonatkozóan.
