This paper presents the research results related to Simonyi Zsigmond Orthographic
Competition in the Carpathian Basin. We introduce the competition and a corpus of
students’ answers which already contains millions of pieces of data that can be analysed
from different fields of science, e.g. linguistics, methodology and pedagogy. We focus
on those questions which posed serious problems for the students (and try to identify
the factors which may be responsible for the poor results), investigate the answers
given by the Hungarian students from Slovakia and compare them with the results of
the students from Hungary.
