The settlement of Pir was mentioned the earliest in 1205, and it became a central place of the region during the early modern period. The buttresses and the polygonal plan of the sanctuary attest the medieval origin of the church. Although modern interventions and numerous burials have limited the research possibilities, an early phase of the nave has been identified, which corresponds to the middle area of the current one. This early nave was widened to the east with the current sanctuary, still in the medieval period, the sanctuary having a polygonal enclosure and supported by buttresses. In a more recent period, during the premodern period, extensive restorations were carried out in the church, the floor-level being raised by approx. 1.20 m. The nave was widened to the west at the time of restoration or later.
