In the rich Middle Jurassic ammonite fauna of the famous ammonitic bank of Villány,
South Hungary, recently a Parapatoceras specimen was found. This ammonite, a Callovian
heteromorph, usually occurs in Callovian assemblages in Europe and elsewhere, however,
the appearance in the Villány fauna, known on the basis of thousands of specimens
and worked out in two classic monographs, seems to be a true rarity. The specimen
is formally described, and previous records of Middle Jurassic heteromorph ammonites
from Hungary are briefly summarized.
