E gondolat jegyében a könyv öt egyetemi professzor kutatását foglalja össze az európai államok, nagyobb hangsúllyal a magyar állam fejlődéséről. A szerzők igazolják azt a tézist, hogy az egymástól korántsem független államfejlődések hatóerejét a csoportos és egyéni politikai érdekek jelentették és jelentik ma is. Eszerint különböző történelmi korokban hasonló mintázatú politikai érdekcsoportok érdekérvényesítése vált közhatalmi és államformáló erővé. Az államfejlődés mögötti csoportérdekek feltárása demisztifikálja az „államérdekre” vagy „nagyhatalmi érdekekre”, az ideológiai, gazdasági vagy politikai értékek eszmevilágára történő hivatkozást. A kutatás tézise és a kötet tanulmányai más megvilágításba helyezhetnek olyan történelmi képződményeket, mint a transzatlanti szövetség, Európa, az Európai Unió vagy Közép-Európa.
